Shouldn't be an issue next season, hearing there is a good chance it will be back on radio next season.
can i read into that, that the powers at be have realized that getting rid of actual radio broadcasts was a mistake ?
No, not necessarily.
Just things will fall in to place and line up better for next season than what they did this year, on a few fronts.

Been watching the stream of West v Norwood (and enjoying it ).
I've been critical of Doug Oakley many times previously, but I thought he was much better in this game, so well done Doug.

Doug has a brilliant voice for calling and I absolutely love listening to him. The player ID does seem to be an issue at times but pairing him with someone that has an elite player ID level like CK, Phil Aspinall, John Nankivell, Neil Cross, Phil Herden, etc and it is very good listening.

Agree and I thought he stuck to describing the play rather than waffling on about irrelevant topics while the play was on, so much better.
Talking of CK, I've hardly seen him at a West game this year, so hoping he might do our game this week.

I'm pretty sure Phil Herden and Fraser Fyfe are calling the West v Eagles game this weekend.

Doug has had a rough life supporting South Adelaide and St Kilda, go easy on him In all seriousness I dont mind him as a caller, but perhaps I'm biased.

Not that i've heard Doug this year or anyone for that matter, anyway i always enjoyed Dougs commentary as he gives history on some players that some people including me wouldn't know which makes for interesting radio, something like ''Lee has been playing for Westies' for a decade but before that he spent a couple of years as a Fitzroy rookie, unfortunately injury was unkind to him back then'' & Scrappys' brother is so & so that plays for the Saints & other interesting things like that

Fyfe shouldn't be doing play-by-play commentary if he can't identify the players.

I'm sure he will be better for the prior experience.

Re: 2017 Broadcasting
With respect to Fraser, a certain standard needs to be demonstrated before 'starting somewhere'.
When the public are paying for a product, they expect that standard.
All the best to Fraser this week and I hope he's done more homework this week than last.

Surely knowing who the players are (and in fact which club they play for) isn't a matter of experience. I appreciate that your calling can improve with experience but you either know who the players are or you don't.

Re: 2017 Broadcasting
I'm sure Fraser Fyfe is a top bloke and is just beginning his career but truly you have to have a love and feel for football.
Fraser just doesn't have a clue about the nuances of football.
A 'catch' is not a mark and his calling is amateurish and annoying. Truly, it's the second time he has called a West game and I'm not sure I can sit through another.
I don't want to wreck someones dreams but the bloke is clearly out of his depth. A basic knowledge of football is the minimum needed and Fraser comes across as not even having that. Sorry if the truth hurts but if he continues calling games I'm ditching the digital pass next year.

Re: 2017 Broadcasting
i don't know the man & haven't heard him, however as i posted earlier everyone starts somewhere & is ordinary at the beginning & improve with experience & confidence...i'm sure Bruce McAvaney would have been below average at the start of his career too.....give the man 4-6 weeks at least to see if there is some improvement

On the other hand, you either understand or have a love for the game.
Being a baseball commentator doesn't overcome that.
I'd rather have Michael Maney or similar.

Re: 2017 Broadcasting
I do have some knowledge of the Bruce McAvaney story and before he ever called the races or trots he was calling the Globe Derby trials on Wednesday nights. Kevin Hillier was the caller of the trials in those days and Bruce asked if he could have a go calling and because he showed obvious keenness and a real interest in the game his request was granted.
Yes he was inexperienced but he found his feet by practise at a non professional level and meticulous preparation.
Bruce was always going to succeed when he went professional as he had put the time in and effort.
I might be a bit rough on Fraser but he needs to go and practise calling games at a silent television and study the players profiles.
As you've said Bayman you haven't heard him.
Well I have twice and it's not confidence. He comes across as a confident likeable bloke.
Running a sport show is different from calling football and Fraser comes across as a complete novice who has next to no ability to inform the viewer of the actual game.
Fraser get a mentor and go listen to how other commentators call.
Take your time and practise before being calling an actual game.
Posters here can call for patience and a fair go but unless there is improvement what I think won't matter, the powers that be will make that call for you.
Sorry to harp on this but it's up to him.

Re: 2017 Broadcasting
CB10, Kevin still goes to the trials every week & as usual he was there again this morning......Fraser may be the worst caller of all time but i still think he needs a month or so before making any decisions.....as for calling off the tv with the sound turned down, that is a great idea overall but with that there is two fall backs, one you can't see what's happening either side of the contest & secondly close up vision would make it easier at times......as for people having a ''feel for the game'' i read earlier lets start with umpires having a feel for the game first

Re: 2017 Broadcasting
CB10 is correct. I've only watched a small part of yesterday's game so I'll reserve judgement, excepf to say Phil H did a good job nursing and prompting Fraser, but if that's necessary, then Fraser's not ready.
No good calling every 3rd player and saying 'West' or 'Eagles' constantly.
Not enough football knowledge, unfortunately.

Good luck to Fraser I mean it, please just don't roster him to any more West games this season.
