Spelly, can you please advise where West's round one loss ranks among its worst round one losses; and where does it rank among first round losses by the reigning premier? Thanks

1) Equal 6th behind 1903, 2002, 1937, 1938, 1980 and alongside 1925

2) Equal 2nd behind: 92 pts 1995 Rd 1 Port 11.15 Glenelg 27.11 (also the highest losing margin by a Grand Finalist)
And equal with 1935 Rd 1 Glenelg 11.11 North 22.19

Has this happened other than these 2 instances in the SANFL ?
When a team gets beaten by 100+ points in RD 1 , then wins their RD 2 match

Central in 1983:
Rd 1 8.10 vs West 23.22
Rd 2 20.23 vs North 8.12

In all three cases, the losing team in round 2 had won in round one.

I know that betting on footy was illegal in 1976 but I know someone who backed North in round 2 of 1976 at odds of 20 to 1.

In all three cases, North Adelaide were involved

Could some tell me if the following players played in the SANFL and their total games for the club/clubs they played for. Their playing careers would be around what I have put in brackets

I know you have a list of players on here but it does not include their games. The WAFL have one it is WAFL FootyFacts and lists every player that has played in Western Australia and their clubs and is very helpful.

Wish SANFL had one listing all players clubs and their games and goals. I know Port Adelaide does. Glenelg put out a book a few years ago called "The Pride of the Bay" which listed their players and games and goals up to that time. The works been done I wish the club historians would put their names on their web sites.

Ali Muir played for Central District. I think that his nick name in the SANFL was Casper.

Lance White played for North Adelaide in 1982. He wouldn't have played more than about 6 games. He came down from the Northern Territory with big Les Turner who actually showed a great deal of promise.

Arch Wilkey played about 70 games for North Adelaide from 1966 until about 1973. He played in North's 1971 premiership side.

Peter Ivanoff definitely played for South

You may be interested in the following obituary which appeared on the official NAFC website in early October, 2007. I think the greatest, Barrie Robran had a hand in writing the tribute.

Vale, Arch Wilkey

North Adelaide premiership player Arch Wilkey died on the 29 th, September at the age of 61 after a long battle with an inoperable brain tumour. Arch played 73 games for North Adelaide between 1966 and 1974 and was a member of the 1971 premiership side. He was a mercurial footballer who epitomised the North Adelaide style of the late 1960s. North were renowned as a high marking, long kicking side full of brilliant players and Arch fitted the mould perfectly. It is contended that Arch was the first player to make the number 23 as famous as it is today – being followed by the likes of Michael Jordan, Dermott Brereton, Shane Warne, David Wildy and Andrew McLeod. No doubt each was inspired by Arch’s brilliance as an athlete and chose to wear “his” number.

In his early career he played mainly at half forward but when Mike Patterson came to the club Arch played more as a defender. Injury curtailed his career. He missed the complete 1972 season with a knee injury, and after playing in the 1973 preliminary final missed the Grand Final with injury. He retired in 1974 and moved to Darwin to live. As much as Arch was remembered as a brilliant player, he was also known as a wonderful and happy character. Soon after he moved to Darwin, Cyclone Tracey hit. When asked what it was like, Arch replied that it was almost as scary as playing Port at Alberton.

If there had been such a thing as an Adelaide A-list in the late 1960s, Arch would certainly have been on it. He was well known in Adelaide social circles as the Manager of the Swinger Disco which was held at the Hotel Australia (now the Adelaide International Hotel).

Arch, who was selected in South Australian state squads in the late 1960s, returned to Adelaide to live in 2001. During his time at North Adelaide he was one of the most popular and well-liked players and all of his team-mates and many friends at North Adelaide are deeply saddened by his passing.

Arch never married and is survived by his three sisters, Edna, Doreen and Lorna. The North Adelaide Football Club wishes to extend its sincerest sympathies to Arch’s three sisters {who all call him “Bill”} and assure them all that he will be sadly missed by all his friends and former team-mates at Roosterland…….but never forgotten.

Graeme Smith doesn't appear in any records I have

Whelan played 20 matches in 1999 and scored 3.10

I have a David Murphy play 2 matches for Sturt in 1996 for 0.1 (so unless if he also goes by Norm) Norm didn't play

Ivanoff was a short-ish, nuggety back pocket.

West Adelaide 2016 are of course racking up unwanted records re a reigning premier's performance—but when reviewing last night's game I noticed 2 different but related kinds of record they might be in the running for.

In both rounds 7 and 8 they lost by a score of 73-100: have any teams scored exactly the same for-and-against in successive rounds, before this?

Then for good measure they lost last night by another 27 point margin (64-91): is this the first time a team has had the same margin and result 3 matches in a row?

West Adelaide won the opening three matches of 1954 by 3 points; no others either by all wins or a mixture

They certainly weren't consecutive games but in 2001 North only won 4 games for the year. The first three victories all had a margin of 23 points. In the last minor round game they led by 23 points with 5 minutes to go before Norwood scored a couple of late goals and alas North only won by 15 points to spoil the statistical oddity. On the other hand at least the win handed the wooden spoon to Glenelg.

Wooooah! Awesome work, all. Particularly Scrappy, with that epic of bizarre statistical coincidences.

I love the fact that the identical-points-in-successive-weeks record hadn't been touched for a lazy 107 years, and now has been done twice in the first half of the season.

They've certainly got that one in the bag. Far less certain is whether they'll be worse across the whole season than the famous Glenelg FC of 1935. I kind of suspect not.

As well as copping a few awful canings (and their sole victory being by just 6 points), Glenelg 1935 were not necessarily pushovers—at least not in every quarter of a match. They would regularly stay with or outperform opponents for 2 or 3 quarters, but still lose by big margins based on individual appalling quarters, for example the 37 point loss to West in R5 where outscoring West for 3 quarters was more-than-offset by giving up 10.7 to 1.4 in Q2. They also sometimes seemingly went out of their way to cultivate losses in matches you'd expect they should have won, for example losing to West Torrens in R13 11.19(85) to 14.5(89), or leading Sturt (who would go on to win a final) 7.5 to 1.1 at quarter time in R15, but proceeding to lose the game comfortably. They wound up 1-16 and 39.26%.

I reckon that West will go on to win more than one game. But if they don't, then in the playoff for worst reigning SANFL premier of all time, they'll struggle to get their percentage above 39% on current form.

Thanks for that Spelly. I thought I had early onset Alzheimers because I can vividly remember watching the replay of that game. Late in the last quarter Craig Balme when kicking out somehow managed to hit Rick Davies standing the mark on the chest. Davies played on and goaled. The cameras panned to the bench where Neil Balme and I think Glenn Rosser thought it hilarious and were laughing heartily. I don't think they would have reacted like that if it were a close game.
