What is the reason for a 12.10pm start to an SANFL game on a Saturday ?
i don't know myself but i'll bet it has something to do with AFL footy
Correct, it will lead into a delayed telecast of the AFL match at 3:00pm.
If it's any consolation at least it will be on the main channel and not 7mate, so it may attract some half decent ratings.

I don't think there would be any player that works on a Saturday these days...bayman wrote:12.10 for a league game is absolutely ridiculous, i feel for those that have to work on Saturday mornings...what happens if a player had to work on a Saturday morning & couldn't get the day off ?

Soderstrom certainly, a couple of other names are out there in the mix also, including one who has not called footy for a number of years but has in the past.
Soderstrom may find some media doors closing in the future, understood that Triple M quite unhappy with the way he departed them very suddenly some weeks back and left them in limbo. Not the first time that has happened either.

Neither Soderstrom or Ginever are play-by-play callers though are they?

Ginever has done some play-by-play calling on FiveAA and used to call on ABC TV, from memory...Flag No.9 wrote:Neither Soderstrom or Ginever are play-by-play callers though are they?
Soders called the 2010 Grand Final, in the absence of Neil Cross, so has done it before, but not that often...
I also heard they will have someone involved who was a part of VFL coverage in the past but not sure of their name...

Re: Channel 7 the SANFL preferred broadcaster for 2014
Tim Ginever has done a significant amount of play by play calling. He worked at TripleM in that role and since moving to Five AA he has mostly done the play by play calling
I'm not sure what his movements with Five AA are this year.

I remember Ginever doing AFL calls on Triple M about a decade ago - I used to enjoy his calling.

Peter Donergan...couldn't see it
Phil ''Coburg'' Cleary.....no way could i see that happening
David Rhys-Jones............couldn't see that either
anyone left ????

as for Tim Ginever, he isn't that bad actually, don't mind him as a caller, he always got that extra bit of energy when calling Port going into attack but that's human nature

Darren Boyd?
He's quiet a good caller but I think he does AFL on SEN and WNBL on ABC so not sure it will be him.
Time will tell, I guess...

I think they are good selections. Soders and Ginevar know their SANFL and Casey is well respected in the industry...
I'd be interested in the thoughts of eartotheground on the commentary team?

Soders and Ginever have played SANFL, John Casey has called a number of sports. A team that fits what Seven were aiming for.

Fair enough...
It's just disappointing that a guy like Chris Kendall doesn't even get a look in. It will be interesting to see who the boundary rounder is going to be...

Any chance the Magarey Medal would be televised?

Possibly, butt hat would be something that plays out with the SANFL and 7, in due course...sapaul wrote:Any chance the Magarey Medal would be televised?

Re: Channel 7 the SANFL preferred broadcaster for 2014
Bored so just done a breakdown of how many matches each team will be covered (this is all done on the presumption that everyone is thinking Port and Adelaide will be covered the most). This is only upto round 16 as the last 2 rounds dates aren't set in stone.
Adelaide 10
Port Adelaide 7
Eagles 4
Central 4
North 3
Glenelg 2
South 2
Sturt 2
Norwood 1
West 1
16 rounds = 32 but it's 36 above as there are 2 split rounds so presuming they will do a match both weekends. I could be way off but just working it all out in line with AFL matches etc on same days.
Some unsure on...
Round 8 (rd 10 in AFL) - Channel 7 have no AFL on the Saturday arvo so could do North vs Port but on the Sunday South vs Adelaide is on at 1.10 so that would be a likely lead in to Carlton vs Adelaide at 4.40 so gave it to that one.
Round 10 - wasn't too sure, 7 have Sydney vs Port on Saturday afternoon so doubtful they'll do Central vs Adelaide, they have a match on the Sunday with the other 4 SANFL games on at 2.10. Guess they will do Port vs Eagles and it will be on digital.
Rounds 13 & 16 see all 5 matches at 2.10 on Saturday's. Round 13 gave it to Port vs North and Round 16 Glenelg vs Adelaide.
Also guessing they will go to Clare to do Adelaide vs Port Adelaide. And haven't counted on them doing any night matches.
But like everyone, hopefully each round isn't set in stone. If Norwood and West are the top 2 going into round 16, it should be televised.

NORWOOD AND PORT ADELAIDE UNDER LIGHTS IN HISTORIC OPENING ROUND CLASH LIVE ON 7MATE
Seven announces massive footy broadcast schedule across three stations. Prime time local footy and first ever Good Friday telecast starts new era.
Channel Seven today announced the opening round blockbuster under lights between Norwood and Port Adelaide will kick off its historic coverage of the new SANFL IGA League.
The meeting of the fierce rivals on Thursday April 3 will be televised LIVE on 7mate from 7pm.
And in a first for the SANFL, Seven will televise LIVE the Good Friday clash between South Adelaide and Glenelg in round 3 on April 18.
It will be the first ever televised football match on Good Friday.
Under the terms of the agreement with the SANFL, Seven will exclusively televise the match-of-the-round throughout the 2014 season with matches to be broadcast on Seven, 7mate and 7TWO.
Every single match in the SANFL IGA League will be telecast LIVE.
The historic agreement, announced last year, means that Seven will be the only place to see both the SANFL IGA League and the AFL.
It is the first time the SANFL and the AFL have been telecast on the same TV station.
Seven will televise almost 400 hours of footy in 2014 with matches from the SANFL IGA League and the AFL.
Seven is set to revolutionise coverage of the SANFL, bringing the passion, excitement and energy which has made the competition one of the strongest in Australia.
“The SANFL is in the DNA of every South Australian footy supporter and our promise is we will present the game like never before,” Channel Seven program manager Meno Toutsidis said.
“We are thrilled to be covering the SANFL again. We look at the period when Seven was last involved, in the 1970s and 1980s, as a high point in the television coverage of the SANFL.
“Our aim is to not only bring back the thousands of fans whose first major footy experience was the SANFL but also to attract a new generation of fans.”
“It is fitting that the first match between historic South Australian rivals (Norwood and Port) should be telecast on one of our new digital stations, 7mate, which has been a remarkable success since launching on AFL Grand Final Day in 2010.”
SEVEN’S BROADCAST HIGHLIGHTS
- Weekly LIVE telecast of the match-of-the round throughout the 2014 season. All Finals to be televised LIVE.
- Matches to be shown on Seven, 7mate and 7TWO.
- Opening round match between Norwood and Port Adelaide to be televised LIVE in prime time on Thursday April 3 on 7mate.
- First ever Good Friday telecast, between South Adelaide and Glenelg in round 3, on April 18.
- SANFL Showdowns between Port Adelaide and the Adelaide Crows in rounds 5 and 14 to be shown LIVE.
- Matches to be shown from all SANFL grounds with an even spread of matches among the 10 teams.
- Almost 400 hours of football to be televised on Seven with matches from the AFL and the SANFL IGA League.
- Three SANFL/AFL double headers where an SANFL match is immediately followed by an AFL telecast.
- Eight viewers choice telecasts where viewers have the choice of watching either an SANFL or an AFL telecast with matches screening at the same time on Channel Seven, 7mate or 7TWO.
- One prime time telecast (Norwood v Port Adelaide) with the possibility of a second LIVE night telecast in the final two rounds, to be finalised later in the year.
- Seven’s SANFL IGA League commentary team to be headed by Mark Soderstrom and John Casey with special comments from Port Adelaide premiership captain Tim Ginever.

If they hold to that, especially with an even spread over all teams, then it sounds really good.
Are we being not cynical enough, or are our fears unfounded?

Re: Channel 7 the SANFL preferred broadcaster for 2014
I thought the ABC telecast was totally professional, with people whose heart was in the SANFL giving a great coverage.
It might be a 'welcome shake-up' to some, but I feel for the passionate people who gave us a top shelf product for so many years, on a relatively small budget.
Remember that the SANFL is having to stump up a million dollars (?) for the new telecast, so I'd expect a very good product otherwise it's a poor deal for us.
My thanks are to those whose heart was in the SANFL and must now be totally shattered. In this case it's Neil Cross, Kym Morgan, Chris Kendall, Ben Knights and all the people behind the scenes. I also think Michael Maney was one of the best callers we had.
I have been lucky enough to see these people work on match days and have some interaction, albeit minor. They've always been totally professional and invariably polite and I thank them for that.
We're now left with the likes of Phil Herdern, Phil Aspinall and their fellow callers. You won't find more passionate SANFL people than these in the media. My huge thanks to them and I hope there's never a 'welcome shake-up' in the SANFL radio coverage.
A final word about one of the casualties - Chris Kendall. It has been an enormous achievement for Chris to go from being relatively unknown to introducing his beloved Redlegs players on their well deserved premiership last year. To get there was the result of so many hours of hard work, but the end result was a polished, professional and popular media person, doing what he loved and, from where I sat, being both admired and enjoyed for what he brought to the game.
We can't imagine what it's like for something like that to suddenly end for Chris and his colleagues.
I wish Channel 7 all the best, but I wont forget what Chris and his colleagues have done for us over a long period.
I hope life turns up new opportunities, which it often does. New opportunities are opening up for me in football and more strength to Chris, the two Phils and all their valued colleagues.
