Re: Your Best by the Numbers.
I think Kevin Salmon wore 27 at Port.
Also Stephen Copping at Glenelg was a pretty fair player.
(And jumping back a few, I think Trevor Sorrell may have worn 31 at Port.)

Jaworskyj was a better player than Brenton Phillips. Jaworskyj was succesful at VFL level, Phillips was a fringe VFL player. Both made North's team of the century but Jaworskyj was in the 18 Phillips on the bench.
Barrie Robran says he only ever saw Jaworskyj beaten twice. Once by John Tilbrook at Unley and by Randall Gerlach in the 1972 Grand Final which North still won by 56 pointsm

Daniel Schell had the ability to do that and actually had one or two seasons playing CHB for the Dogs...Flag No.10 wrote:Not many would have been verstaile enough to play for their state at half back and also win their club's goalkicking award.

One player who only played 70 odd games for us in number 27 but has a fair record as a coach
is Roy Laird

F10, I've been pondering Loveday for some time.
Did he play most of his career in #27?
I thought someone said he wore #1 for a while too.

Re: Your Best by the Numbers.
Max James holds an unfortunate place of notoriety among the 27s. His completely unexpected recall to the Port side for the1984GF against Norwood ranks among the all time left field selections. Port coach Russell Ebert felt James's lack of match fitness would be overcome by his physical fitness from digging ditches at work.
Many Port fans felt it was a major factor in their loss. His initial direct opponent was Peter Laughlin who, while not kicking a goal himself in the match, ran James completely ragged and exploited the gamble badly. I sat ten rows back at the southern end that day ( the end Norwood kicked to in the first term) and it was clear 10 minutes in that Ebert had erred terribly.

Re: Your Best by the Numbers.
With respect to Loveday I remember him generally as number 27. I reiterate that most captains wore number one in those days. Players like John Halbert and Geof Motley who kept their number rather than wear number one were the exception. For this exercise surely it is the number the player normally wore not the captain's number one.
Bob Hammond is an interesting case. He captained North but kept wearing number 29. Where he is unusual is that early in his career he played over 100 games as number 18 and later played over 100 games as number 29.

Re: Your Best by the Numbers.
West have Bob Loveday more often in No 1, but it's an interesting question, as I agree he wore 27 a lot.
I'll ask him next time I see him, although Mark Beswick will know.

Never mind. Many of us know every olayer mentioned, so read and you'll learn a lot of good history.

Like Lee, I have heard and in fact seen every player listed so far play.

Why can't I ? Are you serious . People are posting what they feel are their best by the number but I can't mate ?
I can't believe I actually have to explain this but, how can you say there haven't been many great players named if you don't know many of them?

I can certainly remember Loveday wearing number 1 when Fos Williams was coaching, and Loveday was captain, but he started in 27.

Yes, I remember it well, Phil.Big Phil wrote:I'll never forget the mark that Ferg took out at Elizabeth, against the Dogs.
Do you remember it, Lee? Was down in the south western pocket.
The most courageous mark I ever saw was by Fergie that day,but it wasn't that one, unbelievably, although you could make a good case for it.
Earlier in the day, just a bit north-east of the centre, Fergie took a great mark running with the flight of the ball. He marked it just as the oncoming pack smashed him. It was courage at its finest and I'll never forget it.
He took a while to recover.
Later in the game, he took a similar mark, which was the one you mentioned, again with the flight of the ball, with an oncoming pack.
He could easily have not gone for it in the normal run of play, but he did anyway.
Given the previous mark, you could make a case for either to be the 'best'.
After another game, he missed a lot of footy with a ruptured spleen (I think) and other internal injuries from a similar courageous effort.
Fergie played 105 games, won 4 B & F's.
I was honoured to be able to address the players about him when he played his 100th.

I have a good understanding of SANFL history. I simply said I have not heard of many names mentioned on here . You don't like my honesty and seem to want to shut down any "controversial" comment.
Get a grip mate and let people have their say without being so sensitive.
'olayer' doesn't mean anything, W.
It's what's called a 'typo'. 99 people out of 100 would recognise that it was meant to be 'player'. It happened because I inadvertently hit the key next to the 'p', which just happened to be an 'o'. So I got 'olayer' instead of 'player'. Bugger, but life goes on.
Fortunately, most posters and readers would have realised that it was a typo and that I meant 'player', not 'olayer', especially given the context.
I hope that explanation helps.
I'm very pleased that you're honest. I'm all for honesty, but we don't shut down 'controversial' comments. We do delete the occasional personally abusive comment and we do sometimes warn a poster if they're continually abusive or personal. You may already know that.
Oh, 99 posters out of 100 did actually know that I was joking when I said I didn't know any notable West players who wore number 30. You only had to read earlier posts to know that.
Back to the numbers only from here, no diversions, no arguments, just good talk about the players who have worn the guernsey numbers, whether you've heard of them or not.

I strongly suspect that our discussion of No 1 will be a doozy.
I've got a 'smokey' for that who will be very, very hard to beat.
