The Ashes in Adelaide - Day Three
Mitchell’s Oval
The City of Adelaide produced perfect conditions for test cricket at Adelaide Oval.
Carberry and Root started day 3 with the mammoth task of chasing down the runs. It took 8 overs before England’s wounds were deepened with Nathan Lyon claiming the wicket of Joe Root for just 15 runs.
Kevin Peterson came to the crease, but lasted just five overs, when George Bailey caught him.
Ian Bell came to the crease, where he and Carberry needed to build up a solid partnership.
Like the storms battering the coast of Britain, Mitchell Johnson stormed in at 150km an hour.
Johnson claimed a staggering 7/40 on day three. England’s bid to catch Australia’s already huge lead was left in tatters when they were all dismissed for a total of 172 runs at tea.
There was talk of whether Michael Clarke should enforce the follow on to make England bat again.
The follow on was denied.
Michael Clarke decided to send the Aussies back into bat.
The final session started out slow for Australia.
Chris Rogers (2) was caught in the third over.
Watson was dismissed for a duck (0) just 2 balls later.
Clarke and Warner steadied the pace until Clarke was bowled out in the 22nd over for 22 runs.
Steve Smith entered late in the final session. The partnership between Smith and Warner was slowed right down, again playing some defensive cricket.
Today’s play was certainly exciting. We have seen the reborn Mitchell Johnson at his best and England’s attempt to win the second test almost seem impossible.
This sets up a very interesting fourth and possible final day at what is currently Australia’s Oval.
Stumps day 3
Australia 3/132 (second innings)
England All out 172.
