The Ashes in Adelaide - Day Four
A Day for the English
Day Four at Adelaide Oval was one full of hype.
Fans at the oval had the belief they were heading through the gates this morning to see Australia continue to bat, and then declare at some stage through the day.
The overcast conditions may have changed Michael Clarke’s mind. At 10:30 when field of play started, much to everyone’s surprise Australia’s team walked out onto the field ready to take on the English batting order.
The hopes of the Australian supporters were that it would be a relaxing day and the wickets would fall easily. England had other ideas.
Mitchell Johnson was the man who was holding Australia’s hopes in his hands, and he delivered in the second over claiming the scalp of the English Captain Alistair Cook for 1 lonely run.
Joe Root came to the crease where he had other ideas about finishing the play on the fourth day. Carberry’s day ended in the 11th over after a partnership of just 19 runs.
Kevin Peterson and Root were set to create some frustrating times for the Australians both on and off the field.
The frustrations were being felt amongst the Australian supporters with the defensive style cricket these two were producing.
It was working, the runs slowly building reducing the massive task of runs needed.
Peterson and Root created a handy partnership of 111, before Peterson was dismissed in the 48th over.
Ian Bell (6) was at the crease for a total of six overs before he was dismissed abruptly a catch from Mitchell Johnson.
It looked as if Joe Root was well on his way to his first test international century.
This was suddenly bought to a halt when Brad Haddin caught him for 87 runs.
Stokes (28) was the last wicket to fall late in the day in the 85th over, he was caught by Michael Clarke.
The last five overs were much of the same defensive cricket that England had been playing all day. It was made clear to the supporters at Adelaide Oval that today England claimed the rights in the middle, and that we were coming back for a fifth day of the second test.
