Norwood 2018 season Empty Norwood 2018 season

Post by Scrappy Wed Nov 01, 2017 12:44 pm

Finished 5th in 2017
Played well during the season, but lost their way late in the season

OUTS
Andrew Kirwan
Josh Miller
Kristian Roocke
Dean Terlich
Tim Webber

INS
Declan Hamilton [Western Bulldogs]

Hamilton , 21, has spent 3 years with the Bulldogs in the VFL , was pick number  39 in the 2014 AFL draft
Reported to be a player with elite skills , with considerable pace
Hamilton has interesting breeding
He is the nephew of Andrew[NA/NW] and Darren Jarman [NA]

NORWOOD 2018
On face value , a team that finishes 5th , and loses 5 players and gained 1 is behind the 8 ball in the next season
Depth was a problem in 2017
Will need to recruit a few more players at this stage for 2018
The club should be after Chippendale and Cachia if they are available , they were missed last season , in my opinion

PREDICTION 2018
Where will NW finish up in 2018 ?
Unless NW recruits well, I would think 4th-7th finish

There aren't to many "ins" as yet at any of the clubs.
West seem to have scored a few as have the Eagles, but the rest will probably follow once the afl draft all gets done to know who is still available.

I think we won't see much until after Christmas.

Very early days for recruiting.

I'd expect lots of announcements between now and Christmas.

Most clubs will be active and Norwood will certainly add to its list.

Where has Josh Miller gone? He left he Bays after some more game time but didn't seem to appear in many games for the Legs.

It’s either Myponga or Willunga can’t remember which one as was told a few players at once.....I can’t believe he thought he’d replace Bauldestone or Dawe

Caleb Edmead in I believe, as is Mitch Wilkins. As mentioned elsewhere Lyndon Hupfield is also out. He and Miller had no impact on the league side.

Yep, just got the same mail about the former bulldog, I can also add that Simon Phillips has had a change of heart & will finish his career as a redleg, love to know why the change of heart, club loyalty or a pay rise?

Good to see Simon staying at the Parade.

However he goes, it will be a decision he'll appreciate later.

If Caleb Edmeade joins Norwood
Maybe just maybe he could have some information he can share with Jarrod Cotton on how to NW can beat CD in finals
Norwood has not beaten Roy Laird coached CD teams in a final, as yet
I reckon the last time NW beat CD in a final was last century

KIRWAN
MILLER
PETTY
ROOCKE

WEBBER

RECRUITS

ABBOTT
AGUIS
EDMEAD

GLENN ?

If I have overlooked any other ins and outs or the above listings are incorrect , let me know

Looks like Norwood should be marginally better for the ins and outs in 2018
Prediction 3rd-6th

Josh Glenn , if he plays SANFL this season, is arguably the most talented player in the comp
His finals form for Centrals last year shows he can turn it on in the BIG games

Michael Talia is prob the most significant signing, Norwood lacked BIG strong key positional players last season

1-3 season after 4 rounds
I had expected 2-2

Look great on paper, but not so great on grass
Could be 2-5 after 7 rounds

The legs have potentially the best fleet of midfielders and smalls in the comp
At some stage during the season I expect the team to have a terrific run of form, and perhaps even be considered the best team in the comp if that streak happens

On the other hand if they are 2-5, they may be too far adrift from a top 3 finish
History shows finishing 4th or 5th means it is very hard to win flags

Expected minor round finish
3rd-7th

Midfield doesn't bat deep enough and isn't physically hard enough, good players in open play when allowed on their own terms. They are a good side on paper and that's it at the moment. They lack leadership, and have too many players with previous success that just aren't the same players anymore. Might be time to give some of the younger players in the reserves or 18's an opportunity. Have to question the level of conditioning they commenced the season in also.

Given a fuller list Norwood might still do some damage this year
Ed Smart and Anthony Wilson provide speed and carry, both still injured
Add Caleb Edmeade, Brady Dawe, Callum Bartlett and Mitch Wilkins to the availability and Norwood are even more potent

All of those players you've mentioned have deficiencies in their game. The reserves are playing well, having only lost a single game on the last kick by under a goal. I don't think there's enough fear of selection, or emphasis placed on credentialled players finding form in the reserves. Also think the club could be rewarding reserves form a bit better.

You’ve got your run of form & arguably one of the best in the competition....however will the form continue for long enough?

Post by Scrappy Sun May 27, 2018 10:06 am

That post was made after Norwood was 1-3
NW are now 5-3 , and are arguably with NA the form team of the comp

I had the belief that the NW midfield would click at some stage , but had thought later rather than sooner

What has also changed in recent weeks is the pressure NW place on opposition players  , that was mainly lacking earlier in the season

Grigg, Panos and Johnston are in great form
The wildcard, Josh Glenn is now fitter and firing
You could call them the awesome foursome
Matthew Nunn adds to that midfield, is having a very good season

There is another midfielder to add
Anthony Wilson resumed in the B  grade on the weekend
He is a very important player at the parade

To answer your question Bayman, yes they should continue in this form
Too many midfield options now for them to lapse in form
The key is Baulderstone , if he stays fit, Norwood has a flag hope

Expected Minor Round Finish : 1st-5th

NW 9-3 wow !

Interesting NW scorelines against AC this season
RD5
NW 14-23
AC 13-8

RD13
NW 13-24
AC 7-9

Norwood had 37 scoring plays in both games

The other red and blue side played in the AFL today
ML 13-24
FR 7-6

Both red and blue teams kicked the same score on the same day 13-24
Had FR bettered their score by 3 points more, it would have been identical scorelines both games

NW
BIG game against ST next week
That game will have significant premiership onus

Expected minor round finish 1st-4th

Expected minor round finish
3rd-7th

Black Cavair 20+ wins ina row
Winx 20 + wins in a row
Richmond 20 + wins in a row at the MCG
Norwood 13 wins in a row in the SANFL

Wow
Im not surprised at the improvement made when 1-3 after 4 rounds
Im amazed at the 13 wins in a row though, and that they are Minor Premiers

I had thought they would finish between 3rd-7th after 4 rounds

The midfield is potent
Since the early rounds Josh Glenn and Anthony Wilson have strengthened the team
Grigg, Panos, Johnston and Munn have been an awesome foursome for possessions
When playing extra well, they are an awesome team to watch

Norwoods chances for a flag improve if Surman starts firing , and If Glenn plays, and most importantly if Baulderstone is fit and firing
Baulderstones skill level has been excellent this season, his foot disposal this season has been very very good

The skill level has been below par in the last 2 wins against CD + NA , and needs addressing
However winning and not playing at peak levels is acceptable

Look a BIG chance to play in the Grand Final , and you have to be in it to win it

Looking at my last post
Surman and Glenn did not play , perhaps ....

Finished 2nd, played ok
The old saying beaten by a better team on the day is applicable in the GF loss
I reckon NW would have most likely beaten any other team in this years GF

What of 2019
Find a a way to retain Mitchell Grigg

http://cdn-sanfl.fluid5.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/14122221/2018-Finals-Week-3.pdf

I noted this for a lot of the year - have a look at the categories, and in particular where Norwood ranked:

Scoring - 1st, by 14.6 points per game, a big gap to a bunch with 82-86
Scoring shots - 1st, by 5.9 shots per game, again, big gap to four teams with 22 something
Inside 50s - 1st, by 2.8, comfortably
Forward efficiency - 1st, again by a huge margin
Ball efficiency - 1st, nice gap
Possessions - 1st, by 12.7 per game
Kicks - 1st, by 8.3
Marks - 1st, but not a huge gap this time
Clearances - 1st; interestingly here, 9th and 10th were North and Eagles
Handballs - 2nd
Hitouts - 4th; again interesting, 8th and 10th were Eagles and North

Norwood dominated almost every stat, went into the GF warm favourites.

However, the stat I thought could be their weakness, came true in the first quarter:
Accuracy - 9th (who was first? North)
3.7 to 5.0, 1st quarter

The reasons why who won and lost, of course go deeper...it was just poignant that the one stat they lacked out of all that would ring true early
