RAPHAEL

Possible line up v WA at the WACA round 1
Weatherald
Raphael
Ferguson

Batting should be entertaining
Most of them could potentially get even better
If they continue to improve Weatherald, Head, Lehmann could even play Test cricket
Bowling ?
As a unit Mennie/Sayers/Worrall did very well last season
Hopefully they can reproduce last seasons very good efforts
Almost won the SS last season
Perhaps if Chad Sayers was not injured in the final SA may have won
I cant find any odds for the 2017 SS winner
Heres my odds, used purely as a guide
VI $3-00
SA $4-20
NS $4-20

The 22 year old had a massive season in Sydney Grade cricket last season
That included back to back double centuries
JAKE WEATHERALD [SA]

58 [83]
23[19]
0 [1]
0 [8]
27[47]
66[61]
96[223]
270 runs
38.57 average
61.08 strike rate

TRAVIS DEAN [VIC]
Future Australian Test player ?
Debut season last season
808 runs
38.47 average
48.88 strike rate
Travis Dean had a sensational debut match v QL last season

He failed dismally in his 3rd career innings against WA making only 84 [213]
Dean made an incredible 347 runs before being dismissed in the SS
It took 713 balls bowled to him before he was dismissed
Andrew Tye had the distinction of being the first bowler to dismiss Dean in the SS
SS FINAL 2016
111[201]

Definite test match potential if he improves or maintains his form
LLOYD POPE [SA]

Re: SHEFFIELD SHIELD 2016-2017
I was surprised they bought Cossie back. In hindsight, hanging on to Maxy Klinger might have been a better idea.
Thought Coops would have got another spot in the squad.

I would play Kelvin Smith ahead of Raphael. Currently has 200* in the futures league game and is our future. Raphael has been given a number of opportunities and failed to grasp one.
The rest of the team looks pretty much spot on Scrappy.

Sheffield Shield odds
UNITAB
VI 3-25
NS 4-00
SA 4-25
WA 5-50
QL 7-50
TA 13-00
Those odds bear a similarity to my odds posted 16/10/2016
Todays matches
VI V TA
QL V NS
WA V SA
Travis Head and his South Australians are playing on a historic day in WA
It was 400 years ago 25/10/1616 that the first explorer landed in WA
Dirk Hartog, the sailing dutchman landed in an area known as Shark Bay
That land is now called Dirk Hartog Island
The first dutchy to land in Australia was Willem Janszoon
He landed in Queensland in 1606
Before those 2 perhaps an inter galactical explorer was to first to land in Australia
That entity might have got lost and got called a stray alien
So Australia may well have been claimed by the Dutch 400+ years ago
And who knows if cricket today would be so much different

Strange dismissal. Let the ball go and was bowled behind his legs. Ball did hoop a bit but reckon he didn't pick the ball up at all.

That is scintillating batting after being 2/3
Ferguson 101[127]
Head 66 [61]
Cooper 138[154]
Carey batting 8 made 79[121]
What about WA ?
If Voges and the Marsh bothers play a lot of International cricket this summer their batting strength will be weakened

VI 8.7
NS 7.9
QL 2.0
WA 1.5

Like SA last season , QL were stiff to draw NS in the first game with Warner/Smith/Starc/Lyon/Hazelwood playing
Starc started the game was replaced by Douggggggie Bollinger[WHY ?]
VI had the luxury of making the BIG show Glenn Maxwell 12th man in the win against TA

If Mitchell Marsh plays a lot of International cricket I think that Western Australia's batting will be strengthened. How does he hold his place in the Australian team?

Re: SHEFFIELD SHIELD 2016-2017
ALLROUNDERS
Why does Mitchell Marsh get to play for Australia ?
There is a lot of cricket played by Internationals
The days of playing 4 front line bowlers are almost numbered
Shane Watson and now Mitchell Marsh are picked as batsmen that can bowl
They get picked for team balance
It more or less weakens the batting
But the bowling is a bonus as it gives the front line bowlers a break
This outlook has been a basic since Shane Warne retired
Warne not only took a lot of wickets , he also bowled a lot of overs , and was mostly inexpensive
When you have an attack that has 2 champion bowlers in Mcgrath and Warne , Australia could get away with 4 bowlers

63[109]
393 runs
460 balls
56.00 ave
85.22 strike rate
He was sparingly used with the ball last season
His batting is most probably why he gets selected
He averaged 56.00 and was not picked for the next game in 2016-2017
Im at a loss why he is not selected on that excellent form
Perhaps it was his last innings in the SS Grand Final , 63 off 109 balls
Maybe he was dropped because of a strike rate of 57.79 ?????????????
I say that, because there cannot be any other reason
When selecting a player in a format of cricket , a player should be judged on his form in that format
For Glenn Maxwell to be dropped on Matador Cup form is puzzling
Maybe he was unfit, or undisciplined , or whatever not to be selected

Might well be the reason why
The BIG show wanted to play for NSW this season , but VIC declined his request
Since last years SS final this is his form
AU V SL 20/20 iNTERNATIONALS [A different form of cricket to 4 day cricket]
145*[65]
66[29]
211 runs
94 balls
224 strike rate

MS 67[41]
QL 28[25]
NS 38[48]
211
171 balls
123 strike rate
30.14 average
VI: SS........ 58.0 average last season
AU: 20/20.....211.00 average
AU :ODI.......30-14 average
And cant get a game for Victoria
I think Baymans last post is the most logical reason why

When you have an attack that has 2 champion bowlers in Mcgrath and Warne , Australia could get away with 4 bowlers
But when you had Warne and McGrath leading the attack Australia had many more than 4 bowlers. Australia always have had 4 front lines e.g. Warne, McGrath, Gillespie and Lee but in those days they always had the Waugh brothers to provide medium pace relief at as good a standard as Marsh bowls. Players like Blewett, Lehmann and later on Clarke were handy change bowlers as well.
Even when we had Lille, Thomson, Walker and Mallett as our attack we had Greg Chappell and Walters to provide medium pace support and Ian Chappell as a sometime leg spin back up.
If to get chosen at number 6 for Australia you have to be a useful bowler as well, Ken Cunningham and Ian Brayshaw would have played heaps of tests for Australia.
I still can't make a case for Mitchell Marsh being in the side.

Couldn't agree more.
Also under the Chairman of Selectors, Rod Marsh, Western Australians seem to have had a dream run into the Australian side. It has been quoted before but whilst many scribes have questioned the number of NSW players in the Australian sides over the years, in the last 40 years Western Australian players seem to get into the Australian side easier than players from some other states. Sure there have been champs from the West but there have been a number of very lucky players to win test selection from WA.

Re: SHEFFIELD SHIELD 2016-2017
Mitch Marsh is lucky to get a gig. He cannot be picked on "potential " forever. At the moment he averages 24 with the bat and 36 with the ball. He needs to reverse those figures fairly quickly if he is to play as an all-rounder because at the moment he is just an expensive bowler batting too high on the list. We would be better picking another specialist batsmen or bowler.
You cannot afford to play someone as an all-rounder who would not make the team if you consider just their bowling or batting performances.
