Re: 2016 SANFL Grand Final: Woodville/West Torrens v Sturt
3/4 TIME
EG 5-6 (36]
ST 8-2 [50]
WUNDKE superb has kicked 4 of the EG 5 goals
The match highlight and perhaps the match winning kick was the Lienert long goal from the forward pocket - half forward area
What now
ST need to keep playing the same style of footy, not to be too accountable and play over safe , and should win
EG need goals, need to obviously attack , they are very capable of fighting back
However by taking chances they may be opened up in defence
My prediction

Wow
I saw Sturtscrunch West Adelaide in round 4
After the game my immediate thoughts were:
They have the skill level but can they play that way under pressure ?
They proved it today with 100+ tackles and absorbing the EG pressure
Round 5 v Norwood
I had backed Norwood under lights at the Parade
I just thought Norwood would be too tough for Sturt
Norwood led by about 5 goals in the first half before Sturt overpowered them
After that game I thought that Mattner had these guys fit and firing, but could they sustain that form for the year
Sturt limped into the finals
I didnt know if they were tired and finished, or whether Mattner was foxing and prepping for finals
This team kept proving they could
Well done to Marty Mattmagnificentter and his team

Re: 2016 SANFL Grand Final: Woodville/West Torrens v Sturt
the last two goals of the third quarter & Boyds' handball on centre wing in the last term were the catalyst that broke the Eagles back, i'm not sure whether the handball (backwards) was poor or his team mate was spectating......................the other point i have is pre game i would have thought the Eagles would win in the air, however Sturt did, they were hungry & relentless & deserved their victory
btw i thought the umpiring was very very good today (if only they umpired like that EVERY WEEK)

Excellent style of umpiring
Agree they prob should umpire like that every game of the season
A couple of 50/50 iffy decisions cost each side an early goal each in the last qtr
Apart from that, they umpired extremely well
Using 5 as a pass mark , I would rate them about 9.2 today
However the question has to be asked
Is it unfair for teams to have to adapt to changes of styles in finals ?
The holding the balls decisions seemed lenient compared to some Minor round games Ive watched this season
As they prob should be

Eagles kicked 7.6 in last year's GF, and 7.7 in this year's. Struggle to score on the big stage.

30,000 was a good crowd. I thought 25,000 was about the max before the game.
But how tight was the game for the most part?
Only really broke open 15 mins into the last term.
So happy how the team played. Constant pressure was what enabled things to eventually turn.
It was a fitting end to SA football this year. Not sure Eagles supporters would agree of course, but at least the best 2 SA clubs got to put there stuff on display in the last week. Eagles were a more than worthy opponent and it is heartening that an enthralling game ensured.

Congratulations to Sturt, a great season and a good win today.
I thought there were far too many ball ups. A few early holding the ball decisions would have opened the game up. Players just held on to the ball knowing they wouldn't get pinged.

Congrats to Sturt and all their fans on this forum ... enjoy the spoils that a premiership brings.
Double Blues were most worthy winners beating all the main contenders along the way, South, Crows and then the Eagles. A great sporting resurrection story.
As for the Eagles, a lot of people I know well are hurting, and will do so for some time .... we have shown quite some resolve in the past to keep showing up until that premiership is achieved .... I hope those involved currently have the strength of character to emulate the efforts of 10 years past.

Phil, 3 premierships at 11 tries over 25 years hurts but some clubs would kill for that record. I woke up this morning and the sun was up so I will be back next year. The boys had a good year but failed at the last hurdle but I'm sure Goddsy will get them up again. He's a good coach but just seemed to get things wrong or just out coached yesterday. I really felt for the reserves. Lost 1 all year and on their biggest day they met a better side.

I thought initially that I would have little or no interest in this game given my teams premature departure from the finals race a week or so ago. However I did find myself watching it!- even though I cared little for who won.
Sturt won because.....
Mattner has brought a very high pressure- afl pressure game- to Sturt from his time in Sydneyand the playing group have well and truly bought into it.. Sturt are very hard to score against and strangle the crap out of you ,and rarely allow you to spread from the stoppages and get quality entries to your forwards.Their tackling is brutal bordering on manic at times.
The big 4 as I call them...Riley.Osborn,McMahon and Martin...all on big pay checks played very well...along with Kirkwood of course.
WWT lost because.....
basically they couldnt kick enough goals. Their forwards apart from Wundke were well held.Boyd played his usual stat gathering game, accumulating at will, got plenty of it..in most cases handballs recieved, but did not hurt the opposition very often.
Time for a massive cleanout ; can get it done during the minor round but have too many non contributors when it counts .

One bad game and massive clean-out required. If that's the case SA had 2 bad games so bigger clean-out required again.
