The Advertiser Team of the Year
Peter Argent did one; have the Advertiser actually done one this year?

A pretty good team selected, someone will always complain I have no problems with it.

OK, can anyone make a case for Callinan?
In on reputation, not this season, I'd say.

I thought Callinan was very good in the games I saw him play, but it was only twice.

Perhaps some small part on reputation, yes, but there have been games this year to show he still is one of the best crumbing forwards in the competiton. The State game against the Vics springs to mind...
Who would you suggest could take Callinan's place, Lee?

Re: The Advertiser Team of the Year
I'll have a think about who would replace him, Phil.
I note Adelaide only had Ian in their best 6 on 4 occasions this year.
The other one I thought was a bit lucky was Liddle. South fans would be better placed to comment, but I thought he wasn't as lively this season?

You could be right about Liddle Lee. I only saw the other teams twice each, where as i saw Liddle 20plus times. Liddle did have some good games, with others coming into the play and helping out, Liddle was not as outstanding as he usually had been.

Re: The Advertiser Team of the Year
thanks BP, while discussions can take place with this player replacing that player etc, you couldn't really argue these players listed don't deserve it

Re: The Advertiser Team of the Year
I could, bayman
I've only just noticed that Craig Pitt is on the bench.
Is this a consolation prize, perhaps?
Craig Pitt's form was better than Chris Schmidt's this year??!!!
Even though he missed games, I'd have Snook in front of him if you have to find a Glenelg player.

If it's not purely numbers based, Simon Phillips could be worth a mention. Has become a very reliable player, and has that real knack of bobbing up at important moments in important games.

so which player named ''on the ball'' would you take out & replace him with Snook ?
i didn't realize that Pitt & Schmidt played in the same position....i better go to the footy & learn something (no i wouldn't have Pitt in there either, the only possible Glenelg player i'd consider would be Alleway but he is no doubt behind those picked)

Chris Kendall's Team of The Year from Sportsbeat
2014 SPORTSBEAT SANFL TEAM OF THE YEAR
F S Phillips (Nwd), B Eddy (SA), M Coad (St)
HF. B MacLeod (SA), M Newton (Nwd), J Cross (SA)
C J Beech (WA), S Summerton (Port), R Tambling (St)
HB J Glenn (CD), K Beard (St), J Shannon (NA)
B J Schiller (CD), K McGuinness (Nwd), J Bode (Nwd)
1st Ruck: K Brooksby (SA), M Panos (Nwd), Z Kirkwood (St)
Inter M Wundke (W/WT), N Amato (NA), S Baulderstone (Nwd)
Coach: Ben Warren (Norwood)
2014 was a year where many players selected themselves quickly, leaving few places up for strong debate. Simon Phillips’s impact at Norwood cannot simply be measured with goals, with his tackling pressure a major aspect of the Redlegs holding the ball in the forward 50 at length. Brett Eddy’s stellar season for the Panthers in attack deserved recognition for such strong improvement, and Michael Coad can swing to both ends of the ground for Sturt.
Panthers Brent MacLeod and Joel Cross were driving factors for South’s rise up the ladder, with both able to work as well in heavy traffic as they do in space, plus finishing n front of goal to top off their importance at Noarlunga. Norwood’s consistency this season was led by many, but Michael Newton’s contested marking and finishing off the work off the work of the midfield was pivotal to their scoring opportunities in 2014.
Many missed the impact of Richard Tambling at Unley this season, but there is no question that his clearance rate, clean hands at the stoppages and penetrating disposal was a major factor for the Double Blues’ excellent season. Steven Summerton took his game to another level this season for the Magpies, even if the umpires did not entirely agree, and while it was hard to find too many consistent performers for West this season, Jonathon Beech could not be faulted for his output in taking his game to another level.
Defence was one of the easiet to select. Kory Beard was stellar in the key defensive posts for the Double Blues all season, and he showed his versatility by moving forward and booting six goals in the first semi loss to South. The Roosters endured a topsy-turvy season, but one player who never dropped their standard throughout was Jay Shannon, who relished a leadership role to raise the bar higher than ever at Prospect. Josh Glenn proved the second year blue were a myth by shining all season for Central, holding a variety of roles and impressing with his calmness and tidy disposal.
Jace Bode seems to take his game to another level each season, and 2014 was no exception, where his poise, willingness to take on the opposition and hit targets under pressure was notable all year. His skipper Kieran McGuinness showed just how much he will be missed in retirement, with pinpoint disposal, ability to take on any size of defender and lead by example with brilliant contested marking, while Jarrod Schiller was justly rewarded with the best and fairest at Central District with a sensational season in defence through zoning off cleverly but able to take the lockdown role when needed.
Few would question Keegan Brooksby’s selection as lead ruckman. He was one of the most improved players in the SANFL this season, with his tapwork straight to an illustrious on-ball division being crucial to South winning so many centre clearances, as well as his contested marking and finishing in attack. Reinvented as a midfielder after an indifferent return season in 2013, Matt Panos was brilliant all year in the clearance and contested possession stakes for the Redlegs, and Zane Kirkwood’s winning margin of nine votes in the Magarey Medal was testament to the dominance of his first season at Sturt after crossing from the Magpies.
Some eyebrows may raise at Nick Amato’s selection on the interchange, but that would by those ignoring his clearance rate, ability to win his own ball and work under the packs at North Adelaide in 2014. Redleg Sam Baulderstone is the logical second ruckman, if this team was playing today, while Michael Wundke proved his worth to the Eagles after crossing from South, to win the Ken Farmer Medal.
In most years, Sturt’s Seamus Maloney would have been a worthy choice for coach of the year, after withstanding numerous player losses to make the finals, but it is very hard to ignore first year coach Ben Warren at Norwood. To not only make the grand final, but lead the Redlegs to a third successive premiership after only 21 matches as a senior coach was testament to his tactical nous, ability to lead former teammates quickly and reinvent a game plan that could have become stale.

Well done, CK...
Always tough to pick these kind of sides and, naturally, there is always going to be debate on certain selections, or non-selections, for that matter...
