Horse pool not big enough at this time of year, what should happen is give Mt Gambier Friday nights with the odd Port Pirie meeting thrown in & this would strengthen the saturday & monday fields, anyway tonight was good I found the first winner although I only backed it for a place at $7.75

Dual Race Series at Pirie a huge success!
13 September 2016
by Graham Fischer

The decision by the Port Pirie Harness Racing Club to run a dual race series last Friday night has been declared a huge success.
Former trainer Peter Lawrence, now a member of the Racing Department of Harness Racing South Australia, said all industry participants he had spoken with had been positive about the concept.
Neville Thomson, secretary/manager of the Port Pirie Harness Racing Club said he had received nothing but positive feedback.
During the ‘off’ season of harness racing in South Australia Mr Thomson took on an idea from the Maryborough Harness Racing Club in Victoria to run two rounds heats of a class during a meeting ensuring the club had two races on its program.
Such was the response to the club’s R1 to R2 race that the club was in fact able to run four races.
As the races were over 1609 metres, there was no extreme hardship on the horses and veterinary surgeons checked every post and pre-race.
The top points scorer from the heats would receive a $1000 bonus, second a $300 bonus and the third $200. That was in addition to any prizemoney won.
Results from the night ended with equal top points scorers with Toby Ryan’s Solanum Dulcamara and Itz Sportz Torque, trained by Ryan Hryhorec each winning one round and finishing second in the other collecting 21 points so the first and second bonuses were added together so the trainers each took $650.
Ryan also had Melegend run second in two heats earning 20 points and collecting the $200 bonus for third.
In another iniaitive, at its next meeting on Friday, September 23, the Port Pirie club will run a dual race series heats for C1 to C2 horses over 1609 metres with one heat at the beginning of the program and the second at the end of the night.
The top points scorers will qualify for a $5500 final at the club’s meeting on Friday, September 30.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
not sure it was that big a success as all of the big punters i know didn't bet on their respective second races....however i believe with the lack of horses around at the moment this idea will likely happen again this week & in the next few weeks to come
HOLDINGS UNITAB
For this meeting Friday 16/9/2016
Bear in mind the horses that ran in race 2 also backed up in race 6
RACE...WIN...PLACE...QUIN...EXACTA...TRI...PICK4
1......5123.....1462......882......559.....4532...1143
2......3207.....761........597.....522......2390...972
3......5036.....1587......761......764.....3860...984
4......3295......777.......848.....466.....3360....967
5......5360.....1112......609.....466......2489...1120
6......2979......572.......458.....462......1683...1259
Those races, races 2 +6 had the least holdings for win and place pools
I think its safe to conclude that :
It was better to have a 6th race instead of 5 [do they have a meeting if only 5 races ?]
That punters are now wary about pacers in these double up races
Those punters not sure about the condition/fitness in the 2nd double up race
Not sure if the runners in race 2 will be driven as they normally are, having to back up later
The verdict
If it means getting meetings on with extra races , do them as a novelty , at this time of the year
Im not sure the punting fraternity would welcome these races on a consistent basis ?
The extra winning prizemonies available in these races make it attractive enough for the pacers connections

Re: Trotting
Lack of pacers
This following correspondence may explain the shortfall of horses
This documentation as of February 2016
It is a projection made by Harness Racing SA
* There has been a gradual decline in the horse population of SA and nationally
The local breeding industry has also been in decline, an ultimately this has had a significant impact on the supply of horses for race fields , which then impacts on wagering and revenue for the code
Additionally horse ownership has been in decline over several years due to a range of factors including the absence of a simple pathway to horse ownership.*
The report follows up with impending follow up actions
1. Engage new resources dedicated to the promotion of ownership including syndication
2. Continue to enhance the South Australian offering through a dedicated breeding program
3. Increase total foal numbers-trend lines to be increasing by July 18
4. Increase total number of horses racing trend line to be increasing by July 2018
5. Increase opportunities for lower priced stallions
6. Support trainers in attracting and servicing owners including dedicated websites
Its going to be a massive challenge for HRSA
Hopefully the initiatives of 2016 to 2020 are successful

2016
WA based driver Chris Lewis was competing in the drivers challenge at GDP Saturday 22/10/2016
1976
40 years ago he drove a horse called Carclew that won at Globe Derby
South Australian born Lewis was only 20 years old on the night of a famous race
That was the Interdominion Final
Chris Lewis has driven over 4000 winners in his excellent career
I was there that night
Carclew was ma$$ive odds

The South Aussie drivers ran first & second in the Australian drivers championships tonight, Wayne Hill (from off the bench) won with Ryan Hyrhorec running second
Management promoted the night well but apparently decided more kitchen & tote staff weren't required, this was a huge mistake, the line up for the tote was too much for two people to handle & the food was over a 30 minute wait, some very disgruntled new people at the trots tonight

Re: Trotting
great effort today by Mick Laird & the team behind Young Nick Frasers' win at big odds today, Jimmy Jacques mentioned Mick was ecstatic as he crossed the line in first place, whether he backed it or not i don't know but what i do know is this horse got savaged by an American pitbull several months ago at Weigal Oval & has been nursed back to health by Mick & the team, Micks' father showed me photos he took during the attack, yes the dog was on a leash with a girl trying to restrain it but she had nowhere near enough strength to hold it & the attack lasted about 5-7 minutes before more help arrived, the photos showed chunks had been taken out of the belly & legs of the horse, the horse tried defending itself by kicking the dog but every time he did, the dog came back again
so well done to Mick Laird & the team

Hey fatty, I backed Thorate that night also, what a run he got settled 4 or 5 back on the fence and never left it , everything in front of him left the fence and he just got a dream run into the straight, I got 16s as well, great memories.

as Thiele has said it is in Perth, this is the second of three years in a row for Perth, the Interdominion lost its importance when firstly the Victorians added some of their big races as point scoring races & then when in Sydney they had heats run in at least 3 states & in New Zealand as well............thankfully the Western Australians are using the traditional method

Result of Interdominion final
1st Smolda
2nd Hectorjayjay
3rd Beaudiene Boaz
A great race with the first two horses having a sprint to the finish for the last 400 metres or so with the winner backing up after his heat win last week.

I didn't realise this until this morning but the winner (Smolda) is the son of former champion pacer Courage Under Fire.
He was only pony sized but mixed it with the best there was 15 years ago, I had the pleasure of seeing him race a couple of times, once here at GD around the year 2000 in the SA Pacing Cup, which he won easily.

2100m x 6 heats
2536m x 3 heats
2936m the final
Smolda appeared to outstay the favorite Hector Jay Jay over the 2936m
Who knows, if the race was over the shorter distances of the heats , perhaps Hectorjayjay might have won ?
Should these finals be run over the same distances as the heats ?
Should there have been a 2936m heat ?
