Re: Music Quotes and Quirks
This could equally go in the Movies Quotes and Quirks thread.
I picked up the 1960s Clint Eastwood Trilogy (A Fist Full of Dollars / For a Few Dollars More / The Good the Bad and the Ugly) recently.
Seen them all before, but wanted to watch them in sequence.
They are directed by the Italian Screenwirter and Director, Sergio Leone who is virtually regarded as the father of the Spaghetti Western.
Eastwood was only his 3rd choice in them as he couldn't afford Henry Fonda or Charles Bronson.
He also directed;
- My Name is Nobody (Terence Hill)
- Fist Full of Dynamite
- Once Upon a Time in the West
- Once Upon a TIme in America
amongst a string of other Italian movies.
Notable, was that he spoke not a word of English until the 1980s when he was directing Once Upon a Time in America.
His movies have a trademark for the music too. His boyhood classmate, Ennio Morricone wrote many of the scores to his movies including those above.
Morricone, himself was and is a prolific composer and has amassed somewhere in the region of 400 soundtrack scores. In some years he wrote scores for 7 or 8 movies.
Although having been nominated for best soundtrack 5 times at the Academy Awards, Morricone has never won the Oscar. It is said that his best shot was the score for Once Upon a Time in West, but they forgot to submit it to the Academy for nomination.
One of Leone's techniques in directing his movies was to play the music written by Morricone for a particular character to the actor, so as to influence his portrayal of the role. This may also have been a method to bridge the language barrier with his American actors. For his part, Morricone often wrote themes for particular characters in the movie as the dialogue was often clipped or minimal when Leone was using Italian actors whose English was at best, ordinary.
Leone departed the Earth for that great Spaghetti Western in the sky back in 1989 at age 60. Morricone is still with us and still tours internationally even as he approaches 85 years of age. You may recall he had to compete 2 years ago with the Clipsal noise when performing in Elder Park.
I am a big fan of Morricone's somewhat haunting soundtracks and he was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2007 "for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music".
An interesting partnership that Leone and Morricone had and its impact on Hollywood.

Re: Music Quotes and Quirks
A couple more things on Leone
Clint Eastwood called him Yosemite Sam
Yosemite Sam was that bustling angry cartoon character in the Bugs Bunny shows
Clint had thought that Leone had a short temper which partially explains the comparism
Leone had an ambition to remake the 1939 classic Gone With The Wind
Imagine Clint Eastwood doing Clark Cables part
Would have been very interesting
The Good the Bad And The Ugly was a great theme song

'' Please please write me a song , I want to be a star."
By
Johnny Young
A request to George Young
Song writer George Young did write a song , that HELPed make Johnny Young a star
It was not Please Please Me , Please Mr Postman ,Please Don't Leave Me or Please Release Me , but a song called Jump Back
Johnny , a young talent , sung that 60's smash hit called Step Back , a MODification on Jump Back.
This song should have been used as the theme song for the some of the English batsmen facing Mitchell Johnson , in the last Ashes series
'Just for the record' Johnny Young in his hey hey day was known as Mr Heartbeat
And the song Step Back , remains one of my favorite Australian songs

JOHN BARRY
Noted for his TV and movie scoring.
These are some of his credits;
James Bond - 12 scores including Goldfinger, Moonraker, Diamonds are Forever
Out of Africa
Dances with Wolves
TV Series - The Persuaders
Body Heat (refer Movie Review thread)
And intersecting back to Jenny Agutter he scored the film 'Walkabout'
A notable career that ended with Barry's death in 2011.
Great composers certainly add ambience to movies with big cinematography and I reckon Barry was one of those.

one of the ''O's'' in the Hollywood sign in California when restored was paid for by Alice Cooper for his friend the great Groucho Marx.......Groucho loved Alice Cooper shows as it reminded him of Vaudeville & he was delighted that his peers would come to Alice Cooper shows including Jack Benny

ALICE COOPER
It is reported :
In the early daze , Cooper and his band where invited to audition at Frank Zappas house at 7:00pm
Cooper and co rolled up at 7:00am
It was meant to be in the evening not morning !
You would not think Cooper would be up until at least high noon ...
There is a version of the events that morning
Cooper and his band put on a performance
'Imagine' all those people playing in your front yard
An incensed Zappa confronted the band
Cooper or copper ?
That was the ultimatum Cooper gave Zappa
Cooper gave Zappa a choice
A record label or to call the coppers !
Zappa Elected to give Coopers mob a gig

THE KNACK
Remember that 1979 smash hit My Sharona ?
Some of the lyrics are interesting
" Such a dirty mind , always get it up
For the touch of the younger kind."
" When ya gunna give it to me
Give it to me
Its just a matter of time Sharona."
I had always though the lyrics were provocative
Just so happens the above lyrics relate to a particular under age girl in real life
Doug Fieger was The Knacks drummer
When Doug was 25 he met Sharona Alperin , when she was only 16 or 17 at the time
Thats What The Little Girls Do, I guess , take a liking to band members
Doug and Sharona dated for several years
Hopefully Good Girls Dont !
ALBUM
Get The Knack
One of my favorite albums
They say The Knack was a one hit wonder band
But I must say all their songs are catchy

MONKEES
This sensational band was a TV manufactured band
There were over 400 applicants to be in the band
Here's some of the applicants who missed out
Stephen Stills [Crosby Stills Nash and Young]
Danny Hutton[Three Dog Night]
Paul Williams [Songwriter]
Charles Manson
I reckon Manson missed out as the criteria was for young people to apply
Charlie was about 30 at the time

Re: Music Quotes and Quirks
Paul Williams could have had the Davy Jones part. About the same height. Williams probably had too much musical cred for them.
Went an saw the Monkees in Adelaide in the late 80s.
No Mick Naismith however, who was estranged from the band by then.

1963 Mr Bass Man [Johnny Cymbal]
1969 Cinnamon [Derek]
Both very catchy tunes of the 1960s
The quirk here is both songs were sung by the same person !
Johnny Cymbal had the stage name of Derek

DURAN DURAN
13 men played in this band from 1978 to 2014 so far
3 of them had the surname of Taylor
None of the Taylor's are related
John and Roger are in the current band
Andy Taylor is a past member

Re: Music Quotes and Quirks
Three songs that I am sure we all know that were big hits.
Love Grows---Edison Lighthouse
Beach Baby---First Class
My Baby Loves Lovin--White Plains
All three songs have the same lead singer.
Tony Burrows sang the lead on all of these hit songs under different group names.
Burrows is a British session pop singer and recording artist who is now in his seventies and had great success recording with many of the worlds biggest entertainers.

Love Grows, I reckon, was the second single I bought as a kid
Love Grows was my favorite song of the times
Good post Testy
Had not realised Burrows sang in 3 bands

DARYL BRAITHWAITE
Mr Ooooooooyeaaaah the great front man for Sherbet
One of Australias greatest singers in one of Australias greatest bands
Was in the same class at school as Olivia Newton John
Daryl was in training to become a fitter and turner
First concert he attended was The Diamonds concert
From seeing them Daryl wanted to be a singer
Daryl has a twin brother Glen
I guess a highlight of Daryls life was one night after a gig at the Old Lion Hotel
I had a flat battery in the car park feeling like a real nowhere man
I asked the driver of a car pulling out for a jump start so I could have another night on the road
He obliged and a few minutes later I was away under a silvery moon
The passengers in that car were the Sherbet boys !

He was on Rockwiz last night, looking older but can still belt out a song, he is 65 years old but still does the singing circuit around the country.

Good one scrappy, I remember that song well and the group, they also had a hit with a song called "Hayride" and one of the lines in the song referred to "making love in the hay" because of this it was banned from being played in New Zealand. How times have changed.
