Timmy had a bit of strife with a few full backs in GFs.

Can you balme full backs for trying to unsettle him

Last weekend there was a game played in the sanfl under 18 cup

That scoreline brought back memories of this game

Now how could I recall the same scorelines 27 years apart ?
This was the commentary, if memory serves me correct , very late in that match
Something like
*There goes the siren, the Norwood player is lining up for goal, but it will make no difference to the result.*

Yes it is true as the score was more or less irrelevant

Port Adelaide led by 61 points before the shot for goal
So it would be either a 55 -60-61 point win pending on the kick
The player was a long way out, his kick traveled a long way and a point was scored

Why am I rambling on about this seemingly insignificant point ?

I took a football treble  that day
I had taken Port to win up to 60 points
That point = got the treble
It paid just over a grand

Thats why I remember that scoreline !

I remember it and I was too young to bet. Port were awesome that year, and it was another season (of many), that the disharmony behind the scenes at the Parade led to yet another season of potential not being reached.

Yes Port were awesome
Port won the flag in 1988, but it was tainted by a great personal loss


Yesterday, 27 years ago was the sad passing away of Port Adelaides Anthony Williams
2 days later Port Adelaide played Norwood at the Parade

I was there , it was prob an emotional game for some of the Port faithful

I reckon PA kicked the last goal of the 2nd quarter
That would have meant they would have been almost 5 goals down
It was a mighty effort by the Magpies

Later in 1988 the 2  teams played again in the last minor round game at Football Park

NW 5-2...8-5....8-7....8-8

Once again PA conceded a BIG lead to NW in 1988 and won easily
They certainly were a great team in those times

PA beat GL in the 1988 Grand final
PA...0-2...4-6....7-10...12-12
GL ..3-3...3-5.....4-7......8-7

Once again PA overcame a deficit of 3 goals to win that season

He missed the gig as Centrals decided upon Kevin Cowboy Neale , a reason being Cowboy had previous coaching experience

I must say a brilliant decision by the Centrals hire archy

Sadly passed away 4/7/2015

The number 16 is famous at the Parade
Noel was a prodigious kick
I watched a fair bit of his career , there was always the expectation he would kick a footy amazing distances

He played his first season in 1969 as a kid
He was almost a Magpie , but Norwood gained his services

The following day Bob Oatey and John Two Eight Elbows Wynne measured the kick
They measured that kick travelling a massive 96 metres !

A French rugby player, Pierre Villepreux was invited to have a kicking competition against Noel
Pierre was rated in circles as being one of the longest kickers in the planet
Noel won the comp beating Pierre by 13.5 metres

Thats somewhere about the centre half back area
Noel let rip a kick that went on and on and on and on and on and on and on
The ball carried close to the Norwood goal area
The kick was touched in a pack of players
It is estimated had the ball not been impeded by the touch, the distance would have measured out to a 100 metre kick !!!

very sad that, you read names like his & you remember them as kids & it seems so early for him & a couple of others to be passing away, yep he could kick a ball a long way

1972 Long Kicking Contest at Wayville:

I know there were more of these, but I looked up this particular one to give an idea as to who participated at the time. As many of you know, Noel Pettingill was the standout of this era. He came into this contest having won it the two previous years.

Held on 4th of September with two heats, the first at 8:30pm:

Sewer, Lipp, Milan Faletic (one of the two Torrens players must have pulled out, but it did not indicate which one), Hobby, Griffifths and Pettingill.

By the looks of who went through out of the various Leagues, the longest two kickers did:
Papst, Ottens, Sachse, Davis, Palmer - I don't think it mentioned which Central player qualified.

The top three kickers all beat the record in this competition, which was held by Bob Shearman. Dean Ottens roosted it 78.34 metres, Pettingill close behind with 77.58 and Lipp with 74.4.

The final, held three days later, gave each player three kicks each. It was noted that the slippery conditions made it tougher than the heats. Pettingill made it three in a row with his best being 67.42 metres. Ottens came 2nd with 64.34 and Lipp third, with 61.4. They earnt $200, $40 and $20 respectively.

Glynn Hewitt is the father of Wimbledon winner Lleyton Hewitt

Dean Ottens [Sturt ruckman] is the father of AFL big man Brad Ottens

Rodney Seekamp is the father of super model Sheridan Seekamp

There was goal kicked by Billy Barrott in the 70s[Richmond-West Torrens] that went about 90 metres

Michael Kingo Taylor [Norwood] kicked a boomer in the 1980 grand final, a torp that went from the centre for a rushed behind

Yes Noel was a prodigious kick - the 1974 story re his kick against Sturt actually happened in June 1974 - a game that Sturt won. Football Park was barely a month old and yet Noel's kick was to be the longest kick on the ground for the next 40 years ! The kick is on YouTube - just search for 1974 SANFL season highlights and the kick is in that highlights package - worth a look.

Very interesting about which Sturt v Norwood game involved the 100 metre Pettingill kick

The Sunday Mail[and Bugsy] have that game at Football Park 8/6/1974
When I searched the 8/6/74 game on a very credible football site it is listed as Adelaide Oval
Might be the June game was LISTED at Adelaide Oval but was a switcheroo to Football park

There was another game played between Sturt and Norwood on 10/8/1974

In any case Noel Pettingill kicked that boomer in 1974 at Football Park

Adelaide Oval was unavailable for Round 1 1971 due to hosting the Baseball Claxton Shield so a neutral venue was required and Centrals were playing at Prospect so Elizabeth Oval was vacant. The other logical neutral venue was Norwood Oval but that ground was hosting Nwd v South. So a crowd of 10,164 journeyed out to Elizabeth - a crowd that the Sunday Mail's Ray Barber considered to be a 'flop' in his write up the next day. The game itself was considered to be one of the best opening games seen for years. Scores were level at 3/4 time and Glenelg led until 17 minutes into the last qtr when John Cahill put Port in front and further goals from Light, Sorrell and Spencer sealed the win. Fred Phillis kicked 8 for Glenelg including 5 in the first quarter.

Bruce Light was a long haired player who played brilliantly on the wing for Port Adelaide
There was a story going around about Bruce Light and Norwoods Phil Carman
They were reports they both had a fight outside Norwood Oval
It probably happened , but never confirmed

1975 and 1976 was when Port played home matches at Adelaide.
