Think it was tony burgess who dealt with davies if memory is correct ---  

Having watched this game several times, I think it was more a case of Davies having a shocker than Burgess blanketing him. Burgess did a good job but on occasion regulation marks slipped through Davies's fingers without any influence from Burgess. He missed some very routine opportunities.

BARRY ION[Woodville]

Well know radio personality, one half of the iconic Bazz and Pilko radio show, in 1982 the highest rating radio show in Australia
The duo later moved to Sydney to do their shows  

Barry Ion played in the 1961 VFL grand Final for Footscray
He wore number 38 that day, the highest number worn in that G/F
13-16 Hawthorn
7-9 Footscray
Footscray led by 8 points at half time, but the effort petered out
Hawthorn end up with a 43 point surplus

Barry Ion played on the half back flank in that G/F
It was Barry Ions first season of VFL football , his coach was the legendary Teddy Whitten
Malcolm Hill also played for Hawthorn in that G/F , he was later recruited by Sturt
Barry Ion played 40 games for Footscray over a few seasons
He was recruited by Woodville in 1967 and played a couple of seasons

Number 4 for WA was a boy by the name of M.Aish  the future star footballer for NW
The irony of Michael  being born in 1961 is that WA beat NW in the 1961 SANFL  Grand Final

I BRADMORE
Represented the Mansfield Park Primary School  playing for Woodville in the Mini League
That might be Ian Bradmore , who played League football for PA ?
l can recall that Ian Bradmore was brilliant junior footballer for Semaphore Centrals 
Ian Bradmore went on to become a premiership footballer at PA in 1980 
I was at that game , what an effort by NW to get so close to winning[PA 11-15..NW 9-9]
It was a great effort by Ian Bradmore to make that particular 1980 PA team , acknowledged as one of the very best teams in SANFL history

If we are taking the period of SANFL only footy between 1960 -1999 as the criteria, then I am comfortable with the above 3 - albeit with a caveat.

The recent Greatest ever team selected by (Kerley, Cornes, Halbert, B Cunningham and Rucci) did not contain Davies which is an error in my view, but then I'm biased. However, you cannot have Bagshaw before Davies.,

Their side did contain a number of SA players who played VFL / AFL (Platten and Blight included).

However, I think Robran and Ebert are clearly 1 and 2 with a number of possibles fitting the criteria for 3.

The caveat would be  possible cases for Davies, Carey, G Motley and Head.
The latter 2 had careers evenly spanning the 50s and 60s, so that compromises things a little.
I never saw either play, and most here would perhaps be similar.and at least not seen that much of them.

Both Davies and Carey played predominantly during the era of Robran and Ebert, and are only a couple of years younger. Even with my bias towards Davies, I find it hard to split he and Carey for dominance and influence on the game for extended periods of their careers but probably in slightly different ways.

Whilst both made their name as the premier ruckmen of the day, Davies hit a purple patch later in his career as a Full Forward and Carey started out as a dominant Centre Half Forward being the best on ground in the 1973 grand final.

I can have wither of them as worthy contenders in the number 3 spot.

Looking at a few numbers, which by no means offers any definitive assessment;

I know every supporter would want someone else from their own team, but Don Lindner was a much better player than many of those chosen.
Merv Agars said he was the greatest high mark since the second World War and Mike Coward and Geoff Kingston rated him the 30th best pl;ayer of the first century of SANFL football

I am stunned that Mark Schwerdt would have Ebert in front of Robran. I have never met a person over 55 who has been of that opinion before. In fact even Fos WIlliams and John Cahill had Robran one and Ebert two.

Perhaps Mark didn't see enough of Robran in finals in particular.

In any best ofs, there will always be differentials
There will be erstwhile opinions presented
In the end its all purely opiniated

For example in picking the 3rd best player SANFL player Ive seen is open to conjecture
I could select any of the following players and either be ridiculed or vindicated in my pick

So to answer a question by Bayman, yes there were many others I could have considered for the 3rd best

While I was very young when seeing him play, and have since seen archival footage, I'm surprised to see John Duckworth in your list, Scrappy. Certainly had a brilliant 1979 season but was under duress with injury in 1980 and didn't play 50 games at Central. While he didn't meet the criteria in my Top 50 of All Time SANFL players published some years back, I still wouldn't have had him in a short list had he played the extra 8 games to qualify (min 50 games).

But with due respect you had a couple of players who wouldn't have made most peoples top 200 list. These lists are all subjective.

PETER ANDERSON R.I.P
The former NA /GL/WDV footballer passed away very recently
My memories of Peter was as a defender and stints as a ruckman
A very good footballer
Bit of a rarity, Peter Anderson played in premiership teams for 2 clubs NA + GL

He was a good footballer, particularly as a full back - a bit short really for the ruck.
I still remember the day when West played North at Prospect (it was '68 or '69) and at the first bounce, the ruckmen were Anderson and Murray Weideman and when the ball was bounced to start the game Weideman ignored the footy and ran straight at Anderson, knocking him out before a stat had even been recorded.

Did they record “stats” back then?

I was speaking metaphorically really bayman, but as a matter of interest I think they did because I can just remember Ken Eustice getting ridiculous numbers of kicks when he played for Centrals, numbers in the 40s.

The stats vary depending where I looked
NA 111 games- 137 goals
GL 81 games-1 goal
WDV 36 games- 2 goals

The stats show that Peter Anderson actually scored a lot of goals at NA
I reckon he kicked 8 goals on one occasion very early in his career
In the 1971 Grand Final against PA , Peter played in defence , he was back pocket
When he played at GL he was mostly used as a  defender

Versatile footballer indeed
Started off as a brilliant ruckman for a short while
Then a key position player up forward
Then finished off as a tough brilliant defender
Peter Anderson was a wonderful versatile footballer

The other consideration is that Bob Hammond was the NA full back ,and he played a magnificent game in defence

I was of the understanding it was Rod Seekamp, but when I mentioned this on snouts was told it was Phil Carman

So can someone please clarify who it was & the story behind it

I can tell you that you are correct bayman; he told me it was before the 1975 GF.
