Richmond are my husbands 'second' team (Used to be his 'first' till Adelaide came along) - he always threatens to drop the crows when they are playing bad and returning to be a Richmond supporter

Well, how about that? Our season is over after Round 1. See all Tiger supporters again in 2013.

Very nice win yesterday by Richmond. Are they finally finding some form?
Who knows. We've seen the Tigers fire up for periods of a season but they've rarely been able sustain their good form.
I hope they make it to September personally. They are well due!

Personally, I think it's once again the West Adelaide influence.
Put Steve Morris in and that toughens them up.
How's Shane Tuck going.

I think the belief that they can finally match it with the Top 8 teams has slowly got there. I think we've proved our worth so far this season against the likes of Essendon, West Coast, Geelong and Collingwood and have beaten Sydney and Hawthorn. Which other club would want to face these teams in the first 9 rounds? The tough test continues with St Kilda and Freo coming up in the next 2 weeks. Hopefully we'll show enough to get us over the line!

Very good game - found myself baracking for Richmond...lol
Can't believe they let Reiwoldt roam virtually free in that last quarter - no one within Cooee of him - kicked probably the winning goals in the end.

Test #1: Passed.
I truly thought it was over when St Kilda hit the lead in the last quarter. So many times we've dropped our head when in that sort of position! But what a great fight back, something I have not seen in years! What were St Kilda thinking though, leaving Jack alone in forward 50??

Those who refuse to watch AFL on 'principle' are missing out on some great games.

Those of us who have wanted more attacking footy and been told it's not possible, applaud both teams for having the balls to play the game the way it should be played.
Let's hope some other AFL coaches awake from their self-induced comas and realise you CAN win by playing attacking football.

Agreed, QAH.
Do you think it's likely for the game to evolve again to an attacking style?

Re: Richmond
Yes I do, and haven't wavered over the years. The most effective way to play the game has always been quick movement of the ball by hand and foot. Leg speed, all very nice, but the ball travels quicker by foot.
Play coridoor footy, kick the ball long and direct into forwards who are one-out, and have nippy small forwards crumbing and kicking oportunist goals. This is pretty much what Richmond did last night, and also against my Hawks the week before and I have nothing but praise for the way they are going about it.
I would dearly love to think the rolling scrum is dead, but it will take awhile for coaches to change. This crap about having forwards run back onto the footy is just that .. crap. Forwards should be presenting themselves to the ball coming downfield.
Well done Richmond, you've restored my interest in AFL footy.
PS ... memo to Richmond supporters .... I told you Hardwick could coach, didn't I?

Not generally doubting the overall sentiment here, but I thought John Kennedy made an artform of that style in the 70s with the Hawks.
Maybe a bit of a generalisation, i know.
Wayne Carey may also raise an eyebrow too.

The Wayne Carey experiment took footy by surprise, it was the exception rather than the norm.
Hudson didn't run back towards goal. Kennedy's game plan was to keep the forward line open so Hudson could lead into open space and compete one-out. Huddo played from the goal-square.

Yes you are right there.
However, I always thought Kennedy's style was to run the ball from defense with the forwards all moving toward goal, Hudson excepted.
Doesn't matter, I understand your point.
I guess Buddy reinforced the full forward theory today. Just like old times?

Re: Richmond
Isn't it marvellous what happens when you play your most potent forward inside 50? Too much theory in today's footy, getting forwards to run up and down the ground until they are exhausted, and then complain when they miss goals because they're stuffed.
The main idea behind Kennedy's style was to crowd the centre of the ground, leaving Hudson with 1/3 of the of the oval. This was why all the others had to run forward. The only time Hudson moved back was, through amazing read of the game, he would know when his opponent was going with him rather than at the ball, so he would take him under the ball, then drop back and mark it.
Ahhhh, don't get me started, I could write volumes on Hudson, he was amazing.
Yes, Buddy kicked the highest number of goals since Cummings kicked 14 for the Eagles back in 2000.
