Mark Ricciuto and Chris Dittmar on Triple M, anyone bother to listen to them? Anything they hear is a story, don't worry about checking if there's any credibility or not, they just splash it over the air and then invite idiots with even less idea to ring in and comment.

Tonight they came on with a "late breaking story". They announced Melbourne were going to offer Cloke a 5 year deal in excess of $5 million. I was told that one 3-4 weeks ago, nice to see the two of them up to speed with the stories Smile

They'd obviously picked it up off another forum and went with it. Lazy, very lazy, but that's about all we can expect these days.

Yes, that's one extreme of the media, AH.

I was able to hear Scott Walsh interview Andrew Collins after the game last Saturday. Good, incisive questions about West and the game, I thought.

Would wonder whether its a common occurrence that a writer would arrive just before half-time to cover a match and then write a match report about it under their name, as was noted recently in SANFL by a number of people.

There was a well know footy journalist in the 60s and 70s who used to write about games he never saw at all. I had the misfortune to work closely with the English media during a cricket match at Adelaide Oval. They would be there for about an hour, go away for a long lunch, return after tea and demand to know what had happened so they could write about it. I refused to tell them Smile

My first media expericence was when the local Gridiron league started in
1986. Back then local sport got more coverage in the Advertiser and they assigned a reporter to cover the doubleheader games on a Saturday night through summer.

He however had a social life and when he realised I took stats and had full details of the scorers he would ring me Sunday to get a report on the two games.. I was then amazed how many of my comments would appear word for word in the paper on Monday.

No he is no longer with the paper.

Well I'm half-way through watching the Sturt v West game on dvd, which carries the RPH call, and so far several players including Chris Schmidt and Ben Newton have been called Shannon Green, which is bad enough normally but less acceptable again when Green didn't play.

Out of interest, outside of Neil Cross, what else do you dislike about their coverage? It seems to have improved a lot over the past couple of years. What commentators/comments people raise your ire?

Really good quality call by RPH last night. They discussed the game (rather than tangential matters), were enthusiastic about it and captured the excitement of it very well. That team, it must be said, is far superior to the Saturday afternoon combination.

I have allways believed that just to have a coverage of the SANFL by the local media (Radio & TV) since the infiltration of the AFL is fantastic.

Even the "professionals " on channel 7 can be a pain at times with there comments and going of in a tangent talking about other thing except the game, ie Commetti trying to be a commedian all the time, NOT.

Agree, testy, especially about the AFL commentators.

It often seems it's all about them, not the game.

I'd rather not say or I will be criticised for offending people and that is not my intention . Michael Maney is another good one.
If it is constructive criticism, I'm sure those you are referring to would not take offence?

waddayamean wrote:No ,I'll leave it to those who should be listening to their work to provide them with the feedback. I assume it would happen at the ABC but community radio stations may not .

Certainly requires improving as it is annnoying . Loved Sticks Phillips comment though today when asked where does this leave Cockshell considering Ports performance and he just relplied "in the 2's ". Ask a silly question I suppose. He is good Phillips knows his stuff and sounds good.

I always welcome constructive feedback and criticism from those willing to put their names to it. Many SANFL fans will come up at a game for a chat and have offered their thoughts on things, which are always welcomed and taken on board, because the person is willing to put their name to it. It's when people make comments from behind the anonymity of a user name, behind a keyboard and don't actually offer anything constructive that can be used as a feedback mechanism, that those sorts of things tend to be ignored, until such time as the critic is willing to either offer something constructive or better still, come up and tell me (or ANY media person, nearly all of whom would be familiar with standardised industry feedback processes that are common to the vast majority of media outlets) their thoughts.

It's all about providing a better service for the listener/viewer and any person in broadcasting worth their salt welcomes it - when it's done in a reasonable way. The type of "I dislike everything that person does, no matter what it is" tends to not really offer constructive that can be acted on, and tends to be left on the backburner, in favour of constructive thoughts and ideas. Most SANFL fans will attest that I'm very approachable and many chat at a game, which is great.

I guess, at the end of the day, everyone involved in SANFL has a real passion for the competition in their own way and are all on the same page on most things. Differences are to be expected, but it comes down to how people want to work through that, as to how things work out.

CK,

Have a chat with your mates on Channel 2. How could they do a highlights package of the Norwood v Port game, and not show Dean Terlich's amazing tackle in the final term? One of the best chases and tackles I've ever seen.

Yes, have to agree. Jars did a pretty good job and kept the call entertaining. Also not frightened to say when he thinks a player screwed up rather than make excuses for him.

Would wonder whether it may explain yesterday's votes in the Player Of The Year Award for the daily paper in the Eagles v West game.

1 vote - Zac Fitzgerald (Eagles)

6 kicks, 6 marks, 5 handballs, 1 free against, no score, 1 tackle.

Must have been 11 extremely impressive possessions.
