A few random notrs.
West have Clarrie Cannon as mainly No 5.
Robbie Donaldson played 167 games.
As well as those mentioned, State half back Trevor Reu is also a Lutheran Minister, I think. He's often spoken in that capacity at past players'dinners.
F10, I think Pfitzner kicked alternately right and left foot week about.

One of the most prized items in my SANFL memorabilia collection is a West Torrens guernsey signed by Lindsay Head after I interviewed him in 2006. A very interesting and humble man.

Re: Your Best by the Numbers.
I saw a bit of Lindsay Head and he was very good. Very protected by the umpires, he benefited from the rule at the time that if you bounced the ball and were tackled, it was 'holding the man' if the ball didn't come back!
Despite that, he was highly skilful and a very smart player who made his possessions count.

As a child I always thought that you had to be a champion to wear 17.
Was Motley the only Port captain until recent times not to wear 1?

The thing I love about this thread is you can scour your memory, not even think about google, etc. and be completely wrong.......... Having said that, let me say this, I reckon one D.N. Kerley may have been No.17, when he wasn't No.1. Anyone...?

There's a photo of him in the 1956 Grand Final and he's wearing either 15 or 25.

According to the North database, he wore 17 for one season and then mostly 34.
Maybe I'll add him at 34.
But he played about 70 odd games.
But then played 2 more in 1996.
Robertson won the "Best and Fairest" award for the North Adelaide Under 19s in 1981 and would go on and play 71 senior games for the SANFL club as well as make one appearance for South Australia. He participated in North Adelaide's 1985 and 1986 SANFL Grand Final losses to Glenelg. In 1987 North Adelaide made a third successive grand final and this time won, however Robertson missed out as had chosen to sit out the last year of his contract. This was because the club hadn't granted him a clearance to Collingwood, who had picked him up in the 1986 VFL Draft.
His two seasons at Collingwood brought him 17 games and he played a final each year. He joined North-Eastern Victorian club Euroa in 1990 but returned to Melbourne when Essendon selected him in the mid-season draft. Although not used by Essendon that year, he played three senior games in 1991.

Re: Your Best by the Numbers.
Peter Woite was a key position player, used at both centre half forward and centre half back. Woite had a good year in 1970 which saw him earn interstate selection for South Australia, the first of 12 occasions where he would represent his state. He won the Magarey Medal in 1975 as well as Port Adelaide's best and fairest award and was a member of the club's 1977 premiership team. In 1979 he crossed to Glenelg where he played his last two seasons, bringing up his 200th SANFL game milestone after managing 182 games with Port Adelaide.
Why did he go to Glenelg?

Why did he go to Glenelg?
As a 17 year old in 1970 he was SA's best player against Victoria. In the early 1970s he also played Centre when Fos Williams played Russell Ebert at Centre Half Back. He started there in the 1972 Grand Final when the plan was for Woite to run with Barrie Robran for 2 1/2 quarters and then he and Ebert swapped. Barrie of course was too good for that plan and thrashed them both.
I once heard John Cahill say that Ian Borchard and Peter Woite were the worst two good players to coach with their aversion to training. Perhaps that explains Woite being cleared to Glenelg and Borchard retiring relatively early at West.
I think that Peter Woite was actually a West Torrens fan as a kid, hence his wearing of the number 17 made famous by Lindsay Head.

He married Lindsay's eldest many, many moons ago .. Didn't work out and both re-married Im pretty sure (certainly Sheree did)

Re: Your Best by the Numbers.
I remember Phil Howlett being a very dangerous tall forward, possibly hampered by a leg injury later on.
Lee - Vic Stoll mean anything to you? I've never heard of him.
When I was younger some of the elders at the club spoke of Stan Costello in glowing terms.
