Alan Obst also wore number 19 for the Bulldogs, as a key forward and played in the 2007 flag, who eventually crossing over to North Adelaide.
He had a couple of years in the AFL system with both the Crows and Kangaroos and was renowned for being a hot head, on and off the field.

If not for bad knees Tony Roach would have been a superstar, his son had a year at the bay recently but injuries didn't help him either

Tony Francis had a decent career after starting in the 19 at Norwood - Peter Laughlin originally wore the number too before switching to the 15 when Alby Menzel hang up the boots.

Re: Your Best by the Numbers.
Some great contenders among the 19's.
John Duckworth is among a rare list to play less than 50 SANFL games and win a Magarey Medal (as did Nathan Buckley and Glenn Kilpatrick), but made a big impact in his initial 1979 season. Unfortunately, injury curtailed him in 1980 and he went home to W.A after that, but certainly a great player at the Bulldogs in his short time there.
Michael Graham remains one of the most highly skilled players I've ever had the fortune of watching live. Just sublime and positioned himself so beautifully so often, was just magnificent to watch in full flight. Unlucky not to win a Magarey, his sheer skill and ability to cover ground so easily was a huge key in Jack Oatey's game plan.
I can quite confidently say that Joel Cross will comfortably remain in this list in 25 years time. Works so brilliantly in traffic, wins his own ball and uses it very well, the added dimension of goalkicking in his last couple of seasons has made him a huge match-up headache for opposition coaches. One of those rare players that can seem to play tall or small, he is easily one of my favorite players to call and has been a massive key to South since arriving. A highly deserving dual Magarey Medallist and absolutely not out of the realms to join the rare triple Medallist club.

Not many 19's at West. 100 gamers were Glynn Hewitt and Ben Fisher recently.
From memory, Peter Phipps, kicked 90 goals in about 1958, wore 19.

Didn't Tony Francis have a run in with Neil Balme at one stage ? (not unusal at any club)

He might have. I've not ever heard that one, but thats not to say it mightn't have happened.
Back on the numbers, Michael Graham is football royalty to my mind, always has been. That was the era when I first really started getting into football heavily, and he was an amazing player. Lightning quick, but had good hands and an even better kick. Would be in my top 10 SANFL players.

Re: Your Best by the Numbers.
Some interesting names on Flaggies list. Terry Phillips was a full back who won the national champion kick contest on World Of Sport. He then went to Victoria but failed.
George Roache was a burly Woodville forward whose main claim to fame is that he is Malcolm Blight's brother-in-law.
Gerry O'brien played on the wing in South's 1964 premiership side.

Re: Your Best by the Numbers.
Speaking of kicking contests, I can remember a national long kick contest being held by a US Gridiron team (or the NFL) in the 70s which was won by Des Ley, a CHF from Westies Seconds (don't know if he ever played League). I believe Ley went to the States and joined a team but not sure how it panned out.

Malcolm Westley was quite unlucky to miss the 1960 premiership side. He played 15 out of the 18 minor round games including the last few, but was dropped for the second semi final.
John Marchioro - I think his main claim to fame is that he was involved in the Glenelg Barbeque Inn a famous restaurant on Jetty Road.
Ken Pascoe was a fine centreman for South. He started in 1965. He was prematurely bald and a pharmacist by trade. He was a cousin of former North captain Ray Trenorden
Roger Williams was from Kangaroo Island.

See my first post on #19 BM, a short bio on Freddy. I thought he was 19 for just about all of his career.

Roger Williams, who owns the iconic Williams Newsagentcy on Kangaroo Island, still holds the record there for the most Mail Medal wins with 7.

sorry Chambo, i didn't go back far enough when checking if anyone had posted it.....i agree he had 19 for most of his career, however i have a feeling he used a second number at one stage, possibly when he came out of retirement in about 1981 or thereabouts for a year or so.................Fred is often shopping on Jetty Road & still looks physically strong for a man who'd have to be around 70 years old

Controversy time, Flaggie.
I remember Bruce Kuchel well. I can't remember him being a left footer, but happy to be corrected.
My memory is that he came from around Murray Bridge area and was a strong, solid full back at a lean time for us?

I have to be right eventually don't I? Well Lee I'll try to research him, but if I find out he was right footed I'm not posting the names of any more full backs.

I play Golf with Mick Coligan most Monday's he is a wonderful human being.
He goes to every norwood match and is very passionate about the SANFUL. He also goes to every Crows match at Adelaide Oval. He is a very good golfer, he plays off a 16 handicap.

Glynn Hewitt was my boss for a number of years when he worked at AGC. He was an ultra compettitive person at what ever he did, similar to his son Leyton.

Re: Your Best by the Numbers.
HAven't got so many for #18 today. I'm sure Flaggy will find a few obscure players to don the 18.
Just back on #19
The Craig Blame / Tim Evans stoush before the '84 GF is quite legendary.
But I have a recollection on a Tim Evans / Fred Phillis Stoush which occurred in the 1977 GF. I do remember Phillis spending a season or two at Full Back for the Bays.
This is about as much as I have found on the stoush. I was at that game and it was more than just a clash of heads.
Port Adelaide had defeated Glenelg three times during the 1977 season, including a 25 point win in the Second Semi Final two weeks earlier. Glenelg had won once, at Glenelg Oval in June. All this counted for nought come the bounce down at 2.20pm on Saturday 24 September 1977 at Football Park in front of 56,717 spectators in the Grand Final umpired by Peter Mead and Robin Bennet.
Glenelg jumped out to a 5 goal to 2 goal lead. Tim Evans kicked two goals late in the quarter to steady nerves and get Port Adelaide into the match. Bruce Light, Port's fiery wingman was reported in the first quarter but disregarded this setback to feature high in the best players. Following Glenelg’s early breakaway and Port reeling the Bays back in, the game became a close, high-scoring game. Port kicked 5 goals to 3 in the second quarter to lead by 10 points at the half time break, which was punctuated by an all-in brawl featuring John Spry employing a fearsome choker hold to try and see the colour of Graham Cornes’s tongue.
As was the theme of the game, injury and controversy were playing a key role. Port had already lost reliable back pocket Carl Fragomeni to injury late in the season. By half time Tim Evans and feisty wingman Kym Kinnear were concussed, Evans’s condition euphemistically attributed in the media to a ‘clash of heads’ with Glenelg full back Fred Phillis. Evans had already kicked 6 goals to half time and was to finish with 7 goals for the match.
Anyone know more?
Some #18s
Brenton Miels (St) - Pacy Sturt wingman in the 60s/70s
Eric Freeman (PA) - Port Full Forward in the 60s/70s and State Fast Bowler
Mark Hewett (G)
Rodney Maynard (N) - Reliable Norward (and Crows) HB and winner of a bundle of Mail Medals down at Lameroo.
Jamie Coppins (NA)
David Granger (PA) "Grave Danger" - The legend still continues to this day.
