Flag No.10 wrote:Yes, that's an interesting distinction. On the first point though, the SANFL doesn't legally have the power to do it.
Thanks for the clarification. At least that's one long held belief I can now shelve.

Re: AFL teams in the SANFL - Revisited
I generally agree with most of GN's points.
As for the individuals, it's a little known point that West's League Director voted against Port's entry (I think).
The biggest challenge for clubs now is the relationship between continuing losses and the salary cap spend. Something has to give.
Long term the SANFL land sale distributions should restore clubs to a reasonable position, but several clubs are struggling now on a day-to-day basis.
The difficulty is that at a time when clubs need their supporters more than ever, the AFL inclusion situation is (understandably) turning supporters away.

Whats the preferred option ?
A: 1877-1990
No AFL in the SANFL
B: 1991-2013
When players not selected in AFL teams were dispersed and playing for the SANFL clubs
C : 2014-2016
Adelaide and Port Reserves having teams in the SANFL comp

That original figure of $250mil or whatever it was (well in excess of the $70mil) that was put on the land at West Lakes would have been handy. Never hear much about that these days.

Yes I agree with that.
Especially when you have just about two-thirds of a reserves comp already in existence with the NEAFL / VFL.

Re: AFL teams in the SANFL - Revisited
Correspondence send to the press 6/9/2016
* I have been a long time supporter of the SANFL
As a South Adelaide supporter living in the northern suburbs on Saturdays I would take my family to watch South Adelaide play
Apart from when the Panthers played in their last Grand Final, we only had the odd winning game for many seasons
We have won the wooden spoon more than any other team and played only a handful of final appearances
We did win a reserves final once that I can remember
Then came the Crows, and I followed them up until bad health forced me into early retirement
Now I cant afford the luxury of AFL football
Brad Gotch turned up and the Panthers look good so I renewed my membership
But I am against the AFL clubs using the SANFL as training matches, most certainly not finals
I watched them tear Central Districts apart-it was not even a contest
I will be at Adelaide Oval at the weekend but thats it for me-it will be the last game I watch if the Adelaide Crows win
I will never attend another game of football again
The Crows get their home rooms for warm- ups and medical staff for half time
They train at Adelaide Oval and have the luxury at West Lakes and medical staff seven days a week
What more do they want ?
How many SANFL clubs keep moonboots in the medical chest?
This will be the last time I sit out in the freezing cold for 20 weeks, knowing theres no chance of a Grand Final
And think about the morale of the players
Let Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide talent teams play each other for 20 rounds a season- then the best can play the best.*

More correspondence
In response to the 6/9/2016 correspondence posted 6/9/2016 , by another to the press
* I fully support the article by Mr.XXX
He speaks from the heart and his thoughts are replicated by many fans and members across the SANFL competition
I am a long time passionate Eagles SANFL supporter and equally passionate Crows AFL supporter
The SANFL Crows are the enemy of my beloved SANFL Eagles
I do not and will not attend any Eagles/Crows SANFL games or Eagles/Port Magpies SANFL games
I can name many at my club and other clubs who vote in the same manner with heir feet
The SANFL competition is a farce having professional AFL footballers pitted against SANFL amateurs
I watched a local news sports channel this week and South Adelaides Bradley Gotch " wondered why the crows 19th man[their AFL fans] do not turn up for Crows SANFL games."
Well Mr Gotch, like Mr.XXX. many supporters like me see the SANFL Crows as the enemy of our previously proud SANFL competition
How long will it be before the Crows win the SANFL premiership and deliver the Magarey Medalist
This is a real chance for the double in 2016
Pity help all of us who loved the way it was.*

I now know 3 profile South Adelaide barrackers now
Don Barker
Southee
Ernie Sigley
I asked Don Barker after the match just concluded
" You must have been about 24 when South won their last flag in 1964."
He replied
" I missed that final."
You have to feel sorry for South Adelaide barrackers
I barrack for St Kilda , so I can appreciate thier frustrations
SA have now been eliminated in 2014 + 2016 finals by Port Reserves and Adelaide Reserves

Re: AFL teams in the SANFL - Revisited
If Adelaide's AFL team makes it to the Grand Final, and their SANFL team wins the SANFL premiership, it could be a dry old time at the West End Brewery Chimney unveiling ceremony in the week after the SANFL Grand Final, assuming the players are given time off to attend and know what it is.

If so,
The players can follow Jono Beech there !
Jono Beech would be making history
According to Spelly
Jono will be the only SANFL player to win 2 flags in 2 consecutive years with 2 different clubs

Re: AFL teams in the SANFL - Revisited
Been a surge of correspondence sent to the press of late
This one also 6/9/2016
* Mark Rucciuto states in his article regarding the SANFL finals " the rules are set" [The Advertiser 7/9/2016] so how could the crows play someone who under the rules is ineligible?
A few other questions for Mark
the Crows pay 400,000 p.a. to play in the comp
Port Power pays nothing
How does this help the SANFL?
Finally can Mark explain why the Norwood F.C. changed its mind at the last moment and voted " yes" allowing entry of the AFL reserves
Could there have been an incentive
All of this goes to show the whole competition has been compromised and the footy public know it.*
This was sent in by that man, Don Barker
Then I had the privilege to meet him 5 days later at Adelaide Oval
Small world

Another today 13/9/2016
* Another SANFL side massacred by the AFL perpetrators , this time South Adelaide, one of the best performing sides in 2016
When is the SANFL going to put a cap on the number of full time professionals allowed to play in any one match?
As a long time Norwood supporter who goes to every match played in the day time, I will be following the Amateur league next year.*
The rumblings continue
Lack of positive responses from the public about AFL in SANFL as yet

Re: AFL teams in the SANFL - Revisited
I think the only option that is a long term sustainable one, is for the AFL to get its head around a proper national reserves league. It ain't that big a leap.
Under the current WAFL and SANFL setup, interest will continue to diminish until their is nothing financially viable left for the Crows and Power to play in. They will have killed the Goose that laid their golden egg so to speak.
Does the AFL see this, or even want to see this? Or will they only see it when those 2 state competitions cannot continue?
The AFL can prop up the VFL, but it is very unlikely they would do so with the WAFL and SANFL, just to serve the needs of 4 AFL franchises.
Let's face it, if the sanfl management is kidding itself thinking this system is working fine, the AFL won't go against that.
We've had 3 years of this experiment in the sanfl and I give it another 3 years (tops), before we reach that point of continuing being unfeasible. And when the comp under this guise finally becomes untenable, it is going to hit quickly and hard.
I wonder what Mr Olsen's excuse for this will be? "Sorry we didn't see it coming....."

Re: AFL teams in the SANFL - Revisited
Playing devils advocate here, but if an AFL Reserves' comp was formed, would that cause more harm than good to the SANFL?
- This could/would make the SANFL (and WAFL/VFL etc) a third tier comp, which could result in an even bigger drop off of fans.
- The AFL Reserves sides will most likely have top-up players from the current 2nd tier comps, further diluting talent available at SANFL level
- How would the SANFL attract the next generation of fans that are going to focus on the elite AFL comp, keep an eye on the Reserves, and then what? We're now starting to get a generation of kids whose parents have only ever supported an AFL club, which in a way breaks the usual chain of kids following their parents support of a particular club. Also, kids these days associate themselves with an AFL club over a SANFL club, something an AFL Reserves comp would only exacerbate.

Port Adelaide Magpies were one of the founding teams in the SANFL
Now, Ms Jenkins proposes nullifying the hard work put in by both AFL listed teams throughout the SANFL season
If Port and Crows perform well and have won 3 more games than the 6th placed team, who won against both teams , is that unfair?*

Port argue that by not taking their SANFL club dividend this is equivalent to paying $400,000 I believe.

2016 PRELIM FINAL
ST 2-5...7-11...11-12..15-13
AC 1-4...4-4.....7-7.....10-8
Sturt outscored Adelaide in all 4 quarters
It was mentioned on the C7 telecast that Adelaide had not been outscored in all 4 quarters in any SANFL match until this game in 2016
So
Adelaide had not been beaten in all 4 quarters in the Minor round season of 18 matches
That seems to be a good effort for a team that finished 4th with a 11-7 record
