Tim Biddington article

Favorite South Australia X1

Blewett
Bradman
G Chappell
I Chappell
Gillespie
Grimmett
Hawke
Hill
Hookes
Lehmann
Phillips
Richardson

Biddington asks the question
Has there been a more popular South Australian Test cricketer than Darren Lehmann ?

A wonderful article
Well done Tim

I might have thought Les Favell might have got a guernsey in the popular team
I never saw Les play , but have heard and read on a few occasions how popular he was in cricket circles
I heard Les as a commentator, he was excellent on radio

I'm surprised Giffen didn't get a cap.
Three times he scored more then a hundred runs and took ten wickets in a match.
His best - 81 & 97* and 15 for 185 v. Victoria, at Adelaide 1902-3

At times it seems that Vic Richardson seems to get a cap more for his status as a grand father then his prowess as a cricketer.

Perhaps because he was a Norwood footballer he didn't fit in the Popular catergory !
He makes any SA team on ability

If you're picking a 'favourite' team, Les Favell would be captain.

If you're picking on ability, Barry Jarman or Gil Langley would be in front of Wayne Phillips.

Neil Dansie is another 'favourite'.

It was a difficult task, having to leave out Darren Lehmann , Ian Chappell, David Hookes, Vic Richardson as batsman
Perhaps I could have left out George Giffen and used Greg Chappell as the allrounder , and included another batsman
Ive left out a few good bowlers as well who could well have made it

Here are the squads Ive picked out
Batsman

Blewett
Bradman
Causby
I Chappell
Dansie
J Darling
R Darling
Favell
Hilditch
Hill
Hookes
P Hughes
Inverarity
Klinger
Lehmann
Nobes
W Phillips
Redandblack
V Richardson
Siddons
Woodcock

Wicket Keepers
Jarman
Nielson
Phillips
Wright

Allrounders
Cunningham
Giffen

Bowlers

Freeman
Gillespie
Hammond
Harris
Adelaide Hawk
N Hawke
Hogg
Jones
Prior
Tait
Wall

Spinners

Grimmett
Jenner
Mallett
May
Miller
Sleep

There were several players with 40 + games that might be considered

Hole
Alfred Jarvis
Langley
Lee
Lil
Lyons
Noblett
Pinch
Pritchard
Reedman
Ridings
Sellers
Waite
Walker
Wilson

I know little of these experienced players

These players were shoe ins but ...

Garner
Gibbs
B Richards
Sobers

JACK CRAWFORD
Was enticed to come out to South Australia
Jack played for Sussex in England
After researching his 4 season career in South Australia , he would be a contender for a spot in SA best teams

22 matches for SA
1512 runs [40.86]
120 wickets [23.86]

He coached the SA team, and that is an outstanding career for the state
There is an opinion that had he not been a Pom, he would have played for Australia
The ACB deemed him ineligible as he had played Test cricket for England

Scrappy, if you are going to consider Jack Crawford you would have to consider Garry Sobers.

Sobers record for SA :
26 matches
2707 runs at 62.93
137 wickets at 26.02

As great as Jarman was, I think the general consensus was that Langley was better. Langley was named as wicketkeeper in the SACA Team of the 20th Century.

Langley : 26 tests 83 catches 15 stumpings and one of Wisden's 5 cricketers of the year in 1957 for his England tour of 1956.

Jarman : 19 tests 50 catches 4 stumpings and once captained Australia

Both underachieved as batsmen at test level averaging only 14 each, but in those days the tail played very differently to today.

Enter John WinStanley Wilken
Wicket keepers up to Barry Jarman that played for South Australia averaged mostly below 20 with the bat

In 1950 Wilkin made his debut for South Australia and was the keeper
The 25 year old made 25 + 29
That was his debut and last game for SA
SA were  beaten by WA by 116 runs

What might have been for John Wilkin in the days when the regular keeper was Gil Langley
John Wilkin ends up averaging a good 27 as a keeper
John Wilkin ends up never been dismissed by a bowler in Sheffield Shield cricket
He was run out twice !
Both times to the same Queensland  fieldsman Morgan Herbert !
What might have been....

I agree with rig about Langley.

It's also interesting to look at 'keepers' stats. i don't take much notice, as at that level, not too many are dropped and the stats are totally reliant on how good the bowlers are.

eg: averaging 2 catches an innings in India would be pretty good, averaging 2 ctaches a game if you're 'keeping to Lillee and Thommo perhaps not as good.

Gil langley, of course, was an ALP State MP for Unley for some years. I remember one of his 'opponents' at the time was Susie Creamcheese. Shocked

I agree about number of dismissals being somewhat misleading for a keeper.

You can only catch the snicks that come your way. Ian Chappell's big criticism of Adam Gilchrist was that he left too many catches for first slip that he should have gone for as keeper yet Gilchrist snared a huge amount of dismissals.

Michael Bevan
Played his first season with SA 1989-1990
His scores
114-2
6-8*
0-9*
64-7
35-88
5-0
338 runs
33-80 average

Bevan was 19 years old when he made that debut SS ton
He was a brilliant FC batsman , but didnt quite make it at test level
The reverse for his bowling ,where he was exceptional at test level with his left arm all sorts, but not in domestic cricket

BATTING
FIRST CLASS 19147 runs at 57.32
TESTS.........    785 runs at 29.07

BOWLING
FIRST CLASS 119 wickets  44.89
TESTS.........29 wickets at 24.24

Bevans Sheffield shield record average exceeds his excellent first class average
Bevan made 10621 runs at 60.69 in the SS

There are only 3 players ever in the SS to average over 60 of the players that have made 6000+ runs

110.19 The Don
63.13 Ricky Ponting
60.69 Michael Bevan

Statisically speaking Michael Bevan is the best left handed batsman to have played SS cricket

One of the best ever SS batsman of all time
I cant pick him in the SA best team of all time , as he only played 1 season as a teenager

Well done on finding Tim Wall
First class bowling :
330 wickets at 29.93
A stunning 10/36 was his personal best
Was a test cricketer in the Bradman times
Hard to gauge exactly how good Tim was in different times to what any of us have seen

Brett Swain , SA left handed quick bowler took 72 First class wickets at 28.47
Brett has a better FC average than his grandfather Tim Wall

I have a recollection that at the time Bevan was starting out, so too was a lad called Matt Hayden.
I think they both had big wraps and expectations on them.

As young players do, they both had a few early wobbles in and out of the Test side for a while.
Whilst Hayden kicked on, Bevan's Test form faded.
Bevan did become just about the premier Aussie ODI batsman for a few seasons when Hayden didn't get an ODI gig.

Would be interesting to match them both up in Test, ODI, Shield comparisons.
