The Brighton shop appears to be about double the size of the Unley shop
Its more of a Museum than a retail shop !

Was this the first State Of Origin game ?
Not really, but this game was played
11/5/1878
South Australian Natives V Victorian Residents
Adelaide Oval
SAN 1.1 VR 0-0

The Victorians came over for what might have been considered an Exhibition match
Port Adelaide player Le Messurier was the only goalscorer of the game
The Victorian Residents were a heavier team, the locals exhibited skills with little marks
South Australian Natives won despite being 2 players short

About 600 spectators rocked up for the event
Admissions varied from sixpence to one shilling
21 pounds was raised and given to the Adelaide Children Hospital

Scrappy wrote:Tom Wills and Henry Harrison were promoting Football in Victoria in the late 1850s, with a set if rules that were devised for the time, with a bias towards a running and ball handling sport
Word got around in the colony about the exploits of Tom and Henry
Wills went to New South Wales to promote football
Harrison made his way to Adelaide
Such was the influence of Harrison a meeting was set up on 26/4/1860

On April 25 a notice was shown
*Gentlemen interested in the establishment of a football club.
Notice of meeting to be held at the Globe Inn, Rundle Street on Thursday 26th of April 1860.
Signed: J Acraman , W.J.Fullarton, R Cussen.*

The meeting took place with about 16 people attending
A new club was formed called the Adelaide Club
As I understand this :
This Adelaide club was an association of clubs , it had 3 teams evolve, called South Division, North Division and Collegians
The teams were drawn up as a zone using the River Torrens
North division were players from North of the Torrens
South division were players from South of the Torrens
Collegians consisted of past and present scholars and staff members of Adelaides colleges

The first game of football was arranged for Saturday 28/4/1860

The Match :
Weather fine
Started 2:00pm
Captains were J B Spence and that man John Acraman
Acramans team won the game by 2 goals [I cant find the scores]
The game took about 3 hours to be played

South Australian Football was more or less born on this day

30/3/1872
Tom Wills that great pioneer of Australian Rules Football played cricket as well
Tom played for Victoria against New South Wales on March 1872
NS 80
VI 161
NS 55
An easy win for The Victorians
On day 1 Wills was the first change bowler and had the figures of 0/4 off his 2 overs
During this bowling spell, Wills was called for chucking by Umpire Sellars
The significance of this , is that the 37 year old Tom Wills was the first bowler to be called for chucking in Australian cricket
Tom ended up with a First Class career of 130 wickets @ 10.09
Tom was also called for chucking later that year in December 1872

Tom had a tormented life at times
He was in a group of 25 men attacked by native Australians in 1861
Tom and 5 others survived this attack , in what is said to be the worst massacre of white settlers in Australia
By 1880 Tom was institutionalized , after recurring mental issues , and suffering from alcohol issues
He escaped from the Royal Melbourne Hospital on 1/5/1880 , and returned home , all the while suffering from withdrawal symptoms
The next day marked an unfortunate chapter in Australian Sporting history
Tom Wills took his life, stabbing himself to death with a pair of scissors

Is listed as a member of the opening SAFA season of 1877
They played spasmodically and are not listed on any Premiership ladders of 1877 that I have found

The club played games in the 1860-70s
They lost a game 3-0 to Adelaide in 1869
Gawler was in the 1877 SAFA set up , and are listed as a junior club

This appears to be the first game that the club participated in at SAFA level

20/6/1877
Gawler v Adelaide
Venue Gawler Parklands
Gawler 1
Adelaide 1
Adelaide scored after about 15 minutes
Shortly after Gawler scored the equaliser

Gawler played at least one other game, been beaten by Woodville by 1 goal

Gawler did not resume in 1878, and later re joined the SAFA in a second stint in 1887
This is how the club fared in its comeback
1887 -6th of 7
1888- 6th of 7
1889- 5th of 6
1890- 6th and wooden spooners

Gawler then quit the comp for a second time

One ponders how things may have panned out if Gawler succeeded in the early SAFA comps
If they could have lasted to the Electorate re jigging of 1899 , whether that would have made the club more competitive ?
If Gawler did make the grade and continued on from the 19th century, would we have had a Central Districts football Club these days ?

On this day

This is from the Advertiser

* The attempt of the SAFL to arrange for the introduction of another senior team has failed
It had been decided that Barossa should join , and that matches should be played at Gawler
It was believed that the new club would be able to put a strong eighteen into the field , and the programme for the season was drawn up to include Barossa
At the last meeting of the league , however , an intimation was received that it would be impossible to get a good team together , and therefore Barossa must withdraw
That this decision came as an unwelcome surprise to the delegates is to put the matter mildly.*

This is most interesting
What does that do to South Australian football history if Barossa fielded a team in 1913 ?
Had this eventuated, and Barossa succeeded , could the current Central Districts team have been a non entity ?
All supposition off course , but a viable Gawler or a Barossa from the early days could have been a Central District stopper

This was the sentence that sums up just how very close Barossa was to joining
' and the programme for the season was drawn up to include Barossa.'

Any further future attempts to entice a Barossa team may have dissolved with the advent of WW1

Not only may it have been a Central District stopper, but additionally would Glenelg have ever come into the competition. If Barossa had been admitted there would have been an 8 team competition. I couldn't have imagined the league expanding to a 9 team competition less than a decade later.

Barossa couldn't have been less competitive than Glenelg was for the first four years of its history.

15/3/1885
Meeting held at the Prince Alfred College.
For the purpose of an amalgamation of North Parks and Adelaide Football clubs into the SAFA

I'm assuming the amalgamation went through
History shows that Adelaide went on to win its inaugural and only premiership in 1886

Adelaide was in the comp in the opening season of 1877
In 1881 they were an amalgamation of Adelaide and Kensington
1882-1885 Adelaide and Kensington did not play in the SAFA
Adelaide came back in 1886 and won the flag
If my assumption is right, then a North Parks link with Adelaide proved a successful unison.

Sorry to join the discussion late in the piece, yet here is a small piece of information on the Modbury Football Club formed in 1862.

"

History of the Modbury Football Club

OUR HISTORY

The Modbury Football Club is one of the oldest football clubs in Australia (see List of Australian rules football clubs by date of establishment)

The first ever game recorded as taking place was between Modbury and Adelaide in 1862. Each side had 20 players but there were no umpires. The game ended after Adelaide kicked its second goal and the game was declared in their favour 2 goals to nil.

The two teams met again the following year, on a strip of land near the Modbury Hotel (Civic Park), when "the game was kept up with the greatest spirit and good feeling, and so equally were the sides matched that not a goal was obtained"

To celebrate the 100th anniversary, in 1962, and during the states 150th year celebrations, in 1986, a special game was played between the Modbury Football Club and the South Adelaide Football Club at Modbury Oval to commemorate the two oldest clubs in the state.

Guernseys:
Up to1937 - Maroon guernsey with one white band, later replaced with a white vee.
1947-1978 - Dark blue guernsey with a light blue vee.
1979-onwards - Brown & gold vertical stripes.

Grounds:
up to1963 Old Modbury Oval (Civic Park, opposite Myer).
1964 - Memorial Oval, Tea Tree Gully.
1965 - Temporary Oval, now Waterworld Swimming Centre.
1966 - onwards - Modbury Oval.

Leagues :

Prior to 1906 - Records not kept.

1906 - Hills Football Association.
1932 - North Eastern Hills Football Association
1933 - Hills Football Association
1934 - North Eastern Hills Football Association
1936 - East Torrens Football Association
1947 - North Adelaide District Football Association
1969 - Norwood North Football Association
1978 –South Australian Football Association
1988 –South Australian Amateur Football Association"

Adelaide was formed in 1860 until folding in 1893
That means Modbury formed in 1862 is the oldest existing current football club in South Australia

The Adelaide Football Club played its first game against another team , Modbury
A game was played, but I cant find from my sources a result

22/08/1863
Modbury Football Club Vrs Adelaide Football Club
The venue was near the Modbury Hotel
0-0 draw was the result
It was a 20 a side game
There was a booze up and presentations evening after the game
There were no umpires, and the issue was raised post game

Interesting to note that the Modbury men left work for the day and played the game with dignity
As for the Adelaide mob, imagine the travel involved from the city area to Modbury
The Adelaide players might have had cart lag !

Games of the times had teething problems
Games starting late
No set finishing times
No set numbers of players per team
Perhaps a lack of umpires
Spectators were called in to play at times
A variance of playing rules
I have also read that at times the captains had to make umpiring decisions as well

I have found the first game played between Adelaide and Modbury in 1862

13/9/1862
Venue North Parklands
Adelaide Vrs Tea Tree Gully and Modbury Club [interesting how TTG was incorporated as part of the club]
Adelaide 2 TTG + Modbury 0

This is the first recorded game between 2 different clubs in South Australia
Here is a description of the match
* The city team scored an early goal, but the lads form the TTG + Modbury team showed great courage, pressing home many attacks and were most unlucky not to score.
Half way through the game, Adelaide scored again, and then rain fell ...making it nearly impossible for either side to score and Adelaide went on to win the first historic match.*

Rain was a disconcerting factor in these times
Players didnt have the luxury of spriggs , and wet conditions made playing conditions difficult
Wet grounds often led to games being called off

Here's some bits and pieces from a 1965 Publication on South Australian Football
North Parks Football Club

1878
Established as a Football Club

1880
Elected officials at an Annual meeting
W H Sharland elected President
D. Kekwick elected Captain

18/5/1878
North Parks V Woodville
NP won 8-0 , that is a belting as most games ended up in soccer scores of the times
Woodville might have been a very weak side as a few of their players played in the newly formed Norwood Football Club of 1878

15/5/1885
North Parks amalgamate with the Adelaide Football Club
As mentioned Adelaide won the 1886 Premiership
NP and Adelaide played under 2 names
Adelaide as the senior team in the SAFA
North Parks as the Junior team playing in the Adelaide and Surburban League
A representative of the clubs was Mostyn Evan [who had a stand in his name at Adelaide Oval]

There was also a South Park Football Club in the 1870s and a West Park club in the 1880s

I cant track down what happened to the North Parks club after that
Perhaps when Adelaide disbanded in 1893 , North Parks MIGHT have as well
That's purely speculative on my behalf , and purely guess work

A finals format was implemented in 1899 by the SAFA
This is an article explaining the new concept

* On the completion of the first round the 6 clubs shall be divided into 2 sections, to be called A and B section.
A shall consist of the clubs that are first , second and fourth and sixth in the first round,
Each club in section A shall play each other once, and each club in section B shall play each other once, and the clubs having the best percentage in each section shall play a match, and should the winner of such match be the winner of the first round, then such club shall have won the premiership.
Should the club that wins such match not be the winner of the first round, then the club winning such match shall play another and final match for the premiership against the winner of the first round, provided the winner of the first round shall have gained at least 2 points in the first 2 matches of the second round.
In the event of any clubs tying on percentage in either round the position of such club shall be determined by the proportion of points kicked for and against such club.*

2 years later the system was aborted , is anyone surprised that it was !

1894

There were only 4 clubs participating in 1894
North
Norwood
Port
South

Adelaide folded by 1893
North joined in 1893, and was in its 2nd season , and won only once in 1894
It was not until 1897 when behinds were counted for scoring

6/8/1894
Norwood v South
1894 Grand Final

They were the elite teams of the nineteenth century
It was called the Championship match
South got off to good start and had a good lead
Norwood finished the better
NW 4-8
SA 4-8
This game had finished in a draw

There was a replay organised for the following Wednesday
Norwood was unchanged, South made one change
South once again led early, Norwood again finishing the better
It rained in the second half
Both sides were 3 goals each late in the game.
The best left handed Australian cricketer and probably the world of the times, , Clem Hill, of South Adelaide failed to score a goal from a good chance
Clem Hills miss ended up being Souths last chance to score.
Norwood's superdooper forward Anthony Bos Daly scored the last goal of the match and the match winning goal
4-7 Norwood
3-5 South Adelaide

The greatest SANFL team of the 19th century won its 11th title between 1878-1894

TOM LEAHY
Tom Leahy won the Magarey Medal for North Adelaide in 1913
For about half a century the club has been trying to locate his missing Medal
North have gained possession of this treasure recently
Toms grandson was doing some work at the club for his employer and spotted a picture  of his Grandfather , the wheels were set in motion from that point, and the Medal is with the NAFC
The grandson prob saw the actual picture in the magnificent photo display at the club

1898 MAGAREY MEDALIST
Now that that the Leahy mystery has been cleared up , how about this one.
Alby Green won the inaugural Magarey Medal presented in 1898
He is listed in some documentations as being born 1874 and 'vanished' in 1913
The year Tom Leahy won his medal is about the same time some say that Alby went missing
Years later Greens Medal was located [some say in a  store] and the Norwood Football Club is now the proud custodian
But no one has a definitive answer as to the disappearance of Alby Green

The Norwood Historians have put a lot of fruitless energy into the Green mystery
But no one knows what happened to Alby Green
Do you ?

Norwood
Entered the SAFL in 1878
Late in 1880 it lost its first game
By that time Norwood had an incredible winning streak of 31 games
Considering the low scores of the time, that is quite an achievement

I would assume this winning streak of 31 wins is the most in the SAFL + SANFL competitions ?
