Pull your socks up
What's the go with all players having footy socks down these days? apart from one or 2 I noticed on the weekend West v South, that there were only 2 or 3 players wearing their socks up and 2 of them were ruck men who i gather need socks up for their shin guards.
The AFL are the same, i know players who actually cut their socks to just above ankle height, don't ask me why, must make them run faster.
One of my footy coaches when i was young once said (and i can still see him saying today) .... 'if you can't get hold of the footy, at least pull your socks up and look like a footballer'
He used to hate it when players started running around with socks down.

Quite right. When I played as a lad, the coach always told us to make sure our knickerbockers looked good and that there were no nails sticking out from the sprigs.
Seriously though, who remembers the teams lining up before the game so that the umpire could check the sprigs. True.

I suspect in Admin's day, players would place their cap at the place for a mark, after the captain (not umpire) made the decision

That's why I posted as Admin, hoping no-one would know it was me.
I resent the accusation, anyway. That was 2 or 3 years before my time.

An entirely irrelevant question in the context of anything, least of all this topic.
But when was the last time a club changed their socks?

Umpires used to check spriggs and fingernails when I played school football

i don't now the years but i am positive Port went from black & white hooped socks to plain black & changed it a few times, i also think North changed them at one stage, from (or too) a red sock with a 3 or 4 inch white top that folded down & changed to a predominately red sock with a couple of small white strips at the top of it
incidently who recalls Andrew Jarman wearing dress socks rather than football socks in a match ?
i don't think he got into any trouble but it definitely made the budget the next week

I'm fairly sure West changed from black and red hoops to all black when we changed our guernsey from the sash to the vertical stripes in 1974, and then changed back again in 1981 when Kerley was appointed.
I can also remember (I think) the Bays socks were black with yellow tops when their guernsey was black with a yellow yoke, and then the socks changed to hoops when they adopted the sash on the guernsey.
