Greatest SANFL Team
Here we go again. To commemorate the 140 year anniversary year of the sanfl they have come up with a "greatest" SANFL team.
A stellar selection panel, Rucci notwithstanding and candidates many / most would no doubt pick.
GREATEST SANFL TEAM
F: John Platten, Ken Farmer, Malcolm Blight
HF: Bob Hank, Barrie Robran, Lindsay Head
C: John Cahill, Russell Ebert, Ken Eustice
HB: Geof Motley, Dan Moriarty, Walter Scott
B: Michael Taylor, Ian McKay, Len Fitzgerald
R: Tom Leahy, Neil Kerley (c), Bob Quinn
INT: Peter Carey, Paul Bagshaw, Tom MacKenzie, Stephen Kernahan
Coach: Jack Oatey
Selectors: Neil Kerley, Graham Cornes, John Halbert, Brian Cunningham, Michelangelo Rucci
My main issue is if it a a greatest sanfl team, could we say that Platten, Kernahan and Blight had their best for long enough in that league. I would say that arguably all of them had more influential careers in the VFL / AFL than SANFL.
If your picking a team of greatest SA players, then no contest.
But there are others I would rate that had greater influence on the sanfl competition than those 3.
That is not to say they were not great players here, but maybe didn't play long enough. I suspect there will be plenty of people who disagree. Always a subjective thing I guess and no "right" answer.

Pretty good effort, I think.
Rick Davies v Peter Carey is one debate.
Neil Kerley isn't in the best 22 on talent alone, but walks in as a total package.
I'll duck for cover, but not convinced that Paul Bagshaw is in the best 22 SANFL players ever.

In the original team Davies for Bagshaw at the least. 7 B&F v 4 B&F. That shouldn't upset too many.
Whether Davies for Carey. You could mark a case either way.
I'll leave it alone.

Rod Pope would probably be in Wests team of all time , and is also a pleasant barman
4 Interchange players, good point , should only be 3

Re: Greatest SANFL Team
Question
Should AFL form come into the equation ?
Otherwise players of the last 20 years may not be considered
Mark Ricciuto is in that questionable category
Bernie Smith ?
Played at West for 55 games, and then played 183 for Geelong
Once again it is mainly an AFL career

Wouldn't have thought so. Lindsay Head was a champion and Baggies skills were better then McIntosh's. Garry might get a look on in due to longevity and toughness but I don't feel he is in the best 22 ever.

I'd be interested in the opinions of anyone who saw Head play in his prime. I only saw him in his later years and he was skilful but very much what you'd call an outside player today.

i agree, but one has to suggest that having 22 is better than a first 21
