Greatest Bands
Here is a top 10 list of 100 greatest rock bands of all time
This list was made in 2008 from the avrev site
There were a few judges including Jack Sonni who was a guitarist with Dire Straits
1 Led Zepplin
2 The Beatles
3 Pink Floyd
4 The Jimi Hendrix Experience
5 Van Halen
6 Queen
7 The Eagles
8 Metallica
9 U2
10 Bob Marley and the Whalers
There were certain criterias on making this list
The top 4 are unquestionably deserving in any top 10 considerations
The others ?
It would be an insurmountable task by anyone to select a top 10 without anyone disagreeing
So which other bands could be rated top 10 or top 100 ?
Or simply who do you consider to be a great band ?
I rate The Beatles as the Cassius Clays of them all

No argument for these 3 in the top 5.
4 The Jimi Hendrix Experience .......hmm did he do enough?
5 Van Halen .....again maybe not enough for top 10
6 Queen ......yes I think they were influential enough for top 10
7 The Eagles ......... a maybe
8 Metallica ........again a maybe
9 U2 ......yes they have done enough over a very lengthy career
10 Bob Marley and the Whalers ......maybe, probably not imo
Other probables / possibles
Rolling Stones ....love or hate 'em
Oasis .....(?)
Fleetwood Mac
The Who
Ac/Dc
Bon Jovi
The Beach Boys
My top 10 (as I like them)
1 Pink Floyd
2 Led Zeppelin
3 Rolling Stones
4 The Beatles
5 U2
6 Queen
7 Fleetwood Mac
8 Bon Jovi
9 Beach Boys
10 The Who
Outsider: Coldplay
As you can tell I am biased toward the Great Britain influence

Re: Greatest Bands
Sunday Mail has done a list of the best Australian Bands
Great article , 150+ musicians have formulated the list of 50
The top 10 Australian Bands
1. ACDC
2 INXS
3 Cold Chisel
4 Midnight Oil
5 Crowded House
6 Bee Gees
7 Divinyls
8 Silverchair
9 Easybeats
10 You Am I
1-2-3-9 are worthy top 10 entrants
" ACDC are the best rock and roll band that ever existed
I'll regularly play an ACDC album at home "

Re: Greatest Bands
11-20
11 Little River Band
12 Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
13 Powderfinger
14 Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls/The Dots/The Messengers
15 The Church
16 The Presets
17 Savage Garden
18 Dragon
19 Skyhooks
20 The Living End
Dragon an interesting qualifier
They are originally a NZ formation ,before making Australia their base
Im surprised LRB made it 8 spots above Skyhooks
If you were living in the seventies Skyhooks were probably more popular at the time ?
CK may disagree ?

Re: Greatest Bands
In terms of global impact - particularly in the United States - and an overall record, Little River Band should easily be top 10.
Cold Chisel's influence is there, but radio, particularly after they broke up the first time, has created a lot of that. They barely made a dent overseas, for starters.

Re: Greatest Bands
This is a response sent to the press in the Have Your Say section about the top 50
TWILIGHTS IN THE DARK
The published list of best OZ bands should have included The Twilights
What were you thinking?
At least 2 members of the band were inducted into the SA Hall of Fame this week!
Interesting to note that LRB which made 11th position and the Twilights who missed the top 50 had the same lead singer in Glen Sharrock
A possible reason for the exclusion of great bands such as the Twilights, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs , Ray Brown and the Whispers and Zoot , is they go too far back and perhaps some or many of the judges were not around at the time ?

I love Led Zeppelin, still do, there music has stood the test of time for many years with the distinctive voice of Robert Plant, what a gem of a voice BUT for pure charting success the Beatles are way out in front and will never be surpassed, I will argue that till the day I die.
No other band comes close to what they achieved as far as creating records in the music charts (based on sales) and no other group will ever do what they did as far as that is concerned.
We have a huge CD collection ( that includes music from many of those groups mentioned in this thread) and enjoy a large range of music types but the Beatles will always be number one IMO. Cassius Clay of them all, spot on.
