SANFL Goal of the Year
South Adelaide forward Peter Rolfe won the IGA Goal of the Year award for his goal under pressure from Sturt players in this years knockout semi-final.

Good luck to Peter, but I'd always vote for blokes who kick a goal starting from half back, rather than the one-off fluke shots.
Nothing against Peter, he's a skilled player and it was a great goal, but I think the other two were better.

How does anything in the finals count?

Perhaps a biased view, but I was surprised that Phillips 50+ metre Torp on the run, deep on the pocket vs West wasn't a contender.

Those kind of goals are not 'one-offs' for Peter...

Not the first time that one has been questioned for its omission. There will always be great ones missed, but that, and another couple, were queried around the place. Wonder if any particular reason why.

Agreed, but it comes down to 'instant action' goals and 'half the length of the field' goals.

The goal of the year and for that matter mark of the year are always debatable decisions IMO, there are always marks and goals that are left out that would be very worthy winners.

By the way, I knew which one would win it out the three - goals from the boundary seem to be favoured over others. From a slightly selfish but I think justifiable position, Pooles' would be my choice. To grab the ball out of the pack, turn around, take three bounces, get around a player and kick the goal from 30 on a 35 degree angle was some effort in my eyes. I didn't realise how good a goal it was until I saw it on the highlights package.

Also, I'd rate McGregors' goal which didn't even make the weekly highlights package against Norwood at Norwood - to rove a pack and snap the goal from about a 50 degree angle full tilt was something amazing to see live.

The IGA "Goal of the year" was selected on by football public vote.
Goes to show what the viewing public think is the winner, I think it would be nice to know the % of vote for the 3 finalists.

Of the 3 options I would have voted for Rolfe's, but understand the eye of the beholder is often very different.

I ask again, when have finals ever been included?
Or was there simply so few to choose from?

I believe it was Sturt's Michael Coad for his hanger in Rd.1 against Glenelg. A big jump for a 30 year old. Let's hope he's still got another couple of years left in him.spell_check wrote:Who won the mark of the year?

Seeing that Ch 7 is on board for the first time this year, I suspect this is the first time, anyway what does it matter if the finals are included. The best goal and best mark shouldn't be voted upon till after the G/F. How would it be if the best mark and best goal were taken in the last moments of a G/F to decide the premiership.

I'm with booney on this, the goal and mark of the year has always been selected during home and away games so as to include all teams in the selection of the winner and shouldn't include finals.
Just like the Brownlow medal is awarded to the best player during the home and away season, but as you say it maybe a channel seven thing.
