why would getting dropped be humiliating ? they all get dropped at some stage, hell even Bradman was dropped at least once in his career, i'll grant he could be embarrassed but surely not humiliated

I'm wondering whether perhaps he was one of the problems. Fair enough if you have a grievance, but to air it publicly in the way he has is pretty average.

Pulling the pin half way through a tour is very disrespecting to the team. If he thinks his form is not good enough, then just say to the selectors, pick Monty, I think he may be a better option at the moment. But hang around in case you're needed.

It is no different to a player committing to a team for the season and then pulling out. Lets everyone down.

So what do England do now? Do they fly someone else out to cover this, or stay with a squad one man down?
All it does is transfer the problem to somebody else.

Poor form.

And on the way out make some snide remarks, that's just not good for the team or his country.

I would feel exactly the same if it were an Aussie player.

Oh yeah now that I think about it would be much better to keep an out of form player who doesn't get on with his team mates around... That would be a whole lot better for team morale. And how dare Swann decide to go on his own terms rather than continue on in this unhealthy environment when he's obviously fed up with it and doing nothing for the team anyway.

so if England didn't pick all their out of form players, we'd be playing about 6 blokes starting on Thursday

Trott...........i understand why he went home, he has mental problems etc so i have no problem with him at all

Swann........it is just a case of toughen up princess, oh & great bowlers bowl well in all conditions  Wink

Grimmett, Gibbs, O'Reilly just to name a few got better with age

Pathetic decision by a senior English  player,  "we've lost the series so I am going on home and leave you to it". Wouldn't want him in the trenches when the going gets tough.

Oh and the English media haven't been to impressed either.

Glad he's on there side.  Australia v England Ashes 2013/2014 - Page 5 1135981304

BALLS UP ?
On what I've seen the fast few years , something might need to be done about the Cricket Balls used between the teams
In England the John Wayne cricket ball Seams to swing a great deal more than what the COOKaburra does in Australia

Jimmy Anderson is a case in point
JA swings the Duke like crazy in the old dart
JA is much more up and down with the Kookaburra down under

Maybe they should alternate ?
Use the Kooky in England , and the Duke in Oz ?

One thing for sure, all countries should be using the same cricket ball

Here's one for Harrywho
What if England fluke winning the 5th test ?
A case of, came four one ....

In an all England swap Luton born Monty Panesar has a convenient calf strain which will allow England to play raw Durham leg spinning allrounder Scott Borthwick

Convenient !

a week may be a long time in football but 3 months is a long time in cricket

the next series in February against South Africa in South Africa will show us all how far they have or haven't improved

i believe the settled side we've had instead of the ''rotation system'' is the biggest catalyst in the much improved performances over recent months, players weren't looking over their heads thinking ''i'll be next to go''

Interesting about rotation
Fast bowlers
Cummins
Starc
Pattinson
Bird
All injured at the start of the Ashes series

The next 2 considerations were Coulter Nile and Douggggie Bollinger who were both called up into the squad in case if injuries
Knowing that the next replacements were these 2 , was someone like Johnson more relaxed knowing the next in lines were no threat to his position ?
Had Starc and Pattinson in particular been fit and ready by the first test maybe Johnson would have missed out on playing

With no shield cricket being played for the next month because of the one dayers, will this impede the test players programme going into the tour of South Africa in a month's time ?

I hope not but the ideal preparation to me would have been for the test players to at least get 1 shield game (4 Days) each before the are off overseas.
