It's amazing how you can do something so simple and your back gets put out.
I remember years ago bending to pick a plate up off the lounge - and bang - back out - could not move!
Hope it gets better soon GN.

I'm only 32 for crying out loud! This isn't supposed to happen to a youngster like me!

We agree, bc.
Whatever we may think is the right or wrong policy, asylum seekers are people, with hopes and dreams like all of us. When we see men, women and children drowning, there has to be a better way.

Abbott isn't saying he'll stop them drowning, he's simply saying he'll turn them round and make them sail off somewhere else. Whether that's even possible is another matter. Anyways, I don't see how an Australian politician on any side of politics can be blamed for people overseas wanting to escape poverty and oppression any way they can.

Re: What's Not
bc, your last post has been deleted, as we made it clear a while ago that political posts would be deleted. We have left one post from each poster on this issue to be fair to a continuing discussion, but no more, please.
By all means continue to discuss the asylum seeker issue, but we ask all posters to avoid turning this into a party political debate, within the bounds of reasonable discussion.
Thanks to all posters.

Are these people not trying to enter Australia illegally? Dont be fooled that they are innocent, they know the risk they are taking.

It is not illegal to enter Australia and seek refugee status. And currently approximately 85% of asylum seekers are found to be genuine refugees.

Re: What's Not
Oh dear, to keep away from party politics on this, I'll just say it is not, repeat NOT, illegal for them to seek asylum.
I'll also say that 353 people drowned when just one boat sank in 2001, the infamous SIEV X disaster, so it's not something that has just happened in the last six or seven years.
It is a difficult and complex world-wide problem and many other countries have far larger numbers to deal with.
I'd think there are many 'economic refugees' amongst the recent arrivals, but I'd be just as sure the majority are fleeing persecution and harm. That's what the evidence says.
Far from being afraid of such numbers and where they come from, I judge people on who they are and take into account their circumstances.
IMO, it shouldn't be a party political issue anyway. It's an humanitarian issue and it should be a bi-partisan approach to deal with it.

The warning was for the parts we edited. Bc, which were direct political party references.
Please keep to the spirit of our repeated warning.

Re: What's Not
R&B - you are correct. It is legal for them to seek asylum, just not in Australia once they have arrived in Indonesia.
The UN Convention on refugees does not allow country shopping. Once you arrive at a country where you have no reasonable fear of persecution you are entitled to apply for refugee status and be processed in acordance with the UN treaty.
If you then decide to pay someone to put you on a boat to Australia you are not a refugee here, you are an illegal immigrant.
