there is a couple of references, i think the one Harpo is talking about is when asked about the VFL Blight said (paraphrasing) ''that was something a million miles away down the road & we had very little interest in it'', a bemused MS 'really' ? near the end MB was also asked what would he like to have changed if anything of his career & the reply was ''play more games for Woodville'' MS equally bemused & added something i can't recall at the moment
Phil Carmen was another who said his best time in his football life was at Sturt (or words to that effect)

Phil Carman said when he left Norwood for Collingwood, it was because he thought the VFL was a better competition, but he found out it wasn't, and that Collingwood were nowhere near as professional as Norwood.
How times have changed
The Sturt reference was the time he spent coaching Sturt was the most rewarding time in his football life.

You can understand his fondness here. Without trying to be too parochial, he took a perennial cellar dweller to within 9 points of a flag. Sturt's resurgence from 1995 - 2001 under Fab has been well documented and I think he would look back on that achievement with pride.
Surprised he hasn't been coined with the Nickname "Moses", given he all but took the Blues to the promised land. Although he did have T-Shirt in his honour emblazened with "messiah" on it.
He was an enigma surely. Always came back to the bar with his wife for a frothy or two with the fans.

One of the most exciting days as an impressionable young Norwood fan was the debut of Phil Carman in round 1, 1970 v Port Adelaide. To see a lad straight out of schoolboy footy play the way he did was astounding. Best on ground, had 7 opponents on the day including Russell Ebert and Peter Woite, and belted every one of them.
It's a moment I shall never forget, I just wish the game was on video, I'd pay plenty for a copy.

Assume you mean in a footy sense, of course.
Fab could certainly play.
Didn't he once rub Cornesy's face in the mud? That would have been funny.

Yep, belted was an unfortunate turn of phrase
And yes, Carman rubbed Cornesy's face in the mud, it was beautiful. Cornes had just given the fingers to the Norwood crowd and was strutting around at his arrogant best, so Carman decided to rub his face in the mud. The crowd went nuts

good, glad you've got it, i've been looking for it for 10 minutes, Cornes has often said it was a funny moment with Phil doing it in fun...........imagine that this happened now in the AFL, you get a head high tackle with the likelyhood of a 50 metre penalty to boot
