Update:

How does the idea of a Semi-Final at Norwood Oval, or a night final at Richmond Oval in 2013 sound? TFSA has heard that the idea of home finals at suburban grounds is gaining favour and is well and truly on the agenda.

We'll update as it develops, but good to see the SANFL being active in looking at ideas to promote the competition.

I think it's the way to go but the lights at Richmond need improving for night finals. What about tv coverage?

I think it would o ly be day finals, should it eventuate. The ABC would only cover the games during the day, like they currently do, in my opinion so I don't think night finals would be considered, yet.

If finals are to be played at Coopers Stadium, they would have to improve the infrastructure for ABC TV as well as to accommodate for the extra media coverage that occurs during the Finals. You are not going to get 3 or 4 radio stations calling the game from the media bench at Norwood, or any ground for that matter.

You may be right about the night finals, BP, that was just our addition to the possibilties that might arise if home finals are given the go-ahead.

As for TV, we understand that the ABC are very supportive about covering day finals at suburban grounds.

Finally! Someone out there is listening to the fans! Hope this goes ahead. As I said before, 2 clubs playing at a neutral venue would be fantastic! Very Happy

great idea But unlike the early 70's you CAN NOT give a home ground advantage to any team, however if it works out that the higher ranked side gets the home ground advantage, then yes that is fair enough as everyone would know that at the start of the year

Overall I think its time to give it a shot. Happens now in WAFL & VFL.

Some logistical issues to work through but on a personal basis it would be great to have a home final at Woodville to promote (if the Eagles earnt the right to host one).

Imagine the promotion the minor premier could do with at least two weeks to get the word out in the local community.

I'm in two minds about it. I was surprised at how good the atmosphere was at Footy Park with 7-8K people, and I like the fact that playing there adds some importance to the occasion. I can also see that 7-8K people at a suburban ground could be great too, but what happens if South win a home final? Cars don't create much of an atmosphere for me.

The trick would be the scheduling of the double final weekends.

Would you have two games on the Sunday at the same time
or
in the pre-double header days
- the major final on a Saturday Afternoon (Qualifying, 2nd Semi)
- the minor final on a Sunday Afternoon (Elimination, 1st Semi)
Those that have been at Noarlunga for the two games in recent years that have got 4K would probably suggest otherwise. With the main crowd on one side it should be pretty packed like Unley on a good day.

Of all the grounds with facility issues Unley might be the problem ... what would their capacity be to host a final? 6-7K ?

Chances are there would not be a straight AFL finals clash is the first final was played on a Saturday afternoon

- SANFL Elim / Qual same weekend as AFL Semis with game Fri & Sat Nights

- SANFL Semis same weekend as AFL Prelimins with games Fri night and Sat twilight / night

The Austadiums site lists most grounds at 15,000 including Unley.
That sounds a bit far fetched.

8000 at Unley would be very tight.
I thought it was closer to 6000 with current layout.

Depends what you could do with the South-east corner that currently has no boundary fence and is only used with a marquee for corporate - past players days.

According to Wikipaedia "The highest verified attendance was 22,015 for a league game against Port Adelaide during the 1968 season."
I was there that day and the configuration of the oval was quite different to how it is now. There were mounds all around the northern and eastern sides. Also, if my memory serves me correctly, the Oatey stand hadn't been built at that time. In its place was the old, very small, AC Thomas stand. The rest of that area was a mound. Still we were packed in like sardines. Laughing
