Knuckey Cup Winner at the SAFC
LIDDLE WINS HIS SECOND KNUCKEY CUP
Nick Liddle has tonight been crowned the South Adelaide Football Club’s Knuckey Cup champion for 2012.
In front of 250 guests Liddle won his second Knuckey Cup on 58 votes from fellow on baller and 2012 Magarey Medallist Joel Cross on 50.
Last year’s Reserves Best and Fairest winner and 2011 Reserves Magarey Medallist Tarak Redigolo finished third on 46 votes.
“Nick has had another outstanding season. He was very consistent and his first half of the year and was quite extraordinary in fact. As the season went on he received more and more attention yet continued to win his own football to provide us with drive throughout. He is a very worthy winner of our Knuckey Cup,” said Coach Ron Fuller.
In other awards presented on the night key forward Andrew Ainger took out the League Most Improved Award. The Dr Jim Harley/Frank Brown Memorial Trophy for Best Club Man went to Jacob Crate for his efforts in returning to football from long term injury and his involvement in the Southern Man Made Community Program. Port Lincoln recruit and utility Ky Miller received the David Kantilla Memorial Trophy for Best 1st Year player.
Defender Tarak Redigolo was awarded the Knuckles award, while Nick Liddle received his third Milestone Chemicals Players Player award in a row.
Curtis Perrey was awarded the J.L Brown Trophy for the Reserves Best & Fairest, while Brock Godwin-Knott narrowly won the U18 Best & Fairest from Peter Steffe and Tom Groutsch.
The Knuckey Cup presentation officially marks the conclusion of the 2012 season and with the focus now on 2013 it won't be long before pre-season commences next month.

All players would be awarded a vote depending on their individual performance and contribution to the team, with 5 votes being the highest possible score and no vote being the lowest.

Congratulations to Curtis Perrey. Panthers Reserves Best and Fairest 2012.

On those votes, Redigolo has to be the most improved for the year.

so the Magarey Medalist didn't win it, i know it is just one of those anomalies & has happened before (1969 Fred Phillis for one) but it is interesting how 3 in the middle see it to a panel in the grandsatand knowing what instructions were given
well done Nick

It's happened at least twice at Westies.
Anthony Banik when Glenn Kilpatrick won the MM.
Ryan Ferguson when James Ezard won the MM>

It happened at Port in 1980 when Russell Ebert won the medal and Bomber Clifford won the B and F.
It happened at North in 1996 when Josh Francou won the medal and Tim Nunan won the Best and Fairest

In the two seasons Garry McIntosh won the medal, Jerry D'Antiochia (1994) and Matthew Primus (1995) won Norwood's B&F. I think it's fair to say the club B&F is a more comprehensive award, not the anachronisitic 3-2-1 system of the Magarey. Also clubs look for different things than an umpire would.
Well done to Nick Liddle, can we have a sticky on club B&F awards as they come to hand?

In my opinion overall I feel Liddle had a more consistant year then Cross had.
I felt it took a few games at the start of the year for Cross to get going. Liddle seemed to only have a few quiet games this year.
The games Cross got the 3 votes in at the Magarey Medal he really stood out in.
To me, Liddle was the more consistant one for the year and did some bloody gutsy things this year that I have seen no other South player do for many years. Some other South players need to look up to Liddle to see what it means to play for the jumper and throw your body on the line when it matters.
Well done Lids

Being still the only club not to have one of its players receive the League Magarey since 1991, to look at it another way, these two players won the Eagles B&F and failed to poll a Magarey Medal vote:
1995: Andrew Rogers (most in Magarey, Adam Ugrinic, 10)
1999: Adam Pearce (Justin Cicolella & Rhett Biglands, 15)
Pearce was joint B&F with Gavin Colville, who polled 11 votes
In 1997, Steven Hall polled one vote in the Magarey Medal and won the club award
In 2006, Mark McKenzie polled three votes and won the club B&F
The following year, Leigh Treeby polled four votes and won the club B&F

I think South are the only side to have their B&F so far. As Thiele mentioned, a few are having theirs on the 12th of October while Central's is the 20th.
